our son's former wife was too lazy and refused to get out and get a job because she was looking for a way to regain the custody she so deservedly lost - her agenda was to collect child support and stay home on her lazy butt - her kids are just a free paycheck to her, just like our son was - we believe that she was on assistance and wasn't letting the Court know when and where she was making money/working and she still wasn't paying child support - even now the Court still has to get on her case to squeeze child support out of her (to the point of issuing a bench warrant) and I'm still not sure she isn't collecting assistance...how do you find out if someone is getting assistance who doesn't deserve to be? It makes me very upset to know that someone like this can fool people when there are people out there who are really trying to get on their feet. This one lives on in the tradition of her mother who has been chasing social security disability benefits and living off others for years because she doesn't want to work can't hold a job for long, either. We absolutely have no respect for scammers.

Lost my job back in june. New employment has not been forthcoming. I have a cell my parents keep active so i can be cotacted by employers. I have sold every possesion i could find a buyer for. I have ubeen homeless for about a month now,my brother lets me sleep inhis car. Yesterday I finally brke down and went to dhs. Got accepted for food assistance only. I wold be more than wiling to go through monthly drug tests for these state benefits, and agree such should be mandatory.

I think people who have the Bridge Card can purchase anything EXCEPT tobacco and alcohol products. Some party stores sell milk, eggs, bread, cheese and other necessities. However, I have seen people using their Bridge Cards in the stores and they have loaded up on a lot of junk foods. This is 100% true. I work at a party store and people will order cases of energy drinks, junk food, and other items that they do not need. It is government assistance and they should be limited to what they are allowed to purchase. I agree with W.I.C program more. They have certain items they are allowed to get and are controlled. The Bridge card allows them to waste money. People are just wasting the help they receive.

There are good people out there that are going through tough times. Nobody is bad because they receive help from the government. It is the people that choose to take advantage of this help. They will go out and buy a bunch of junk they don't need and wonder where their money went when they need to buy a loaf of bread. I know many people in my area that won't even take time to go look for a job, let alone actually work for anything in their life. You are doing the right thing and nobody should blame you for that.

I am the mother of a 20-something disabled daughter who has recently been issued a bridge card. Although she is dependent on us for everything, it is nice that she can "contribute" to the family since she will never be able to be employed to make a living. So, when you see someone using a bridge card, remember it may be a caretaker shopping for a disabled adult and not using it for themselves.

I'm 24 years old without children, been out of work for a year and have been looking hard for another job all this time. My boyfriend really only makes enough to pay the rent and bills. Before we got the bridge card (mind you, it's only for food), we had to decide if we wanted to pay rent or eat. It's pretty bad when you have to decide if you want to eat that week or not. Then it got to the point where we paid for food and got behind on rent. So this card is really helping us until I can find another job. I didn't want to apply, because my mother used to get food stamps (back when it was paper "money") when I was a child, and she always taught me to never have to do that also. But hard times are hard times.
I read through all the posts and some disgust me. Not everyone wants to do this (I get embarrassed when going to the store and pulling out my bridge card) and it's not a lot of money like some people think it is. We only get $200 a month and with the way food costs these days, we can't go all out like a lot of people want to think. We're not overweight and we try to shop for healthy food items with the occasional snack food items also. I will agree that there should be drug testing though. My ex's brother has custody of his child, he's getting food and cash assistance. Sure, he buys food with the food benefits. But when it comes to the cash benefits, he would pull the money out of the ATM and buy drugs with it instead of helping his child with it, which he depended on his mother to buy the child everything anyway. So yes, I do believe drug testing should be mandatory.
Another thing, they changed the rules when it comes to food assistance a couple years ago. It used to be all about income, now it factors in assets also. Which is supposed to make it harder to get food assistance. If you have $5,000 or more in a bank account or your cars market value is $15,000 or more, you won't be eligible anymore.
