I would cut everything not needed in my life before I even considered a bridge card. Yet many of you whom have the card still pay for internet connection. Why not sell your computer?
For me, the card wouldn't be an option. There is work out there, some unpleasant but at least I wont be a welfare card holder.
ya know. some peoplo need the internet connection for their highschool children to have a better start or to find another job or to try to make a better living for themselves. some people who have the card now actually paid in for years and years just like you. and might not feel so bad needing to use it once in their life. and people bit c h about people with food cards having nice clothes. well some of them people happen to find pretty nice clothes at good will. some people are working but just had some hours cut and need to help fill voids. my husband was thankfully just called back into work so we will now get off, but i sure was thankfull for it and thank god there are programs out there to help honest families.

f-you buddy, i'm not a loser. i'm a vet, i had a good construction job at 30+ an hour and benefits. my wife had a good job. now, we are both off, trying to find work in the meantime. are we supposed to suffer, go hungry, not feed our kids? the way i see it, i've put into this system by paying taxes for so many years, now it's here when i need a little help until we get back on our feet. so take your loser comment and shove it up your ass.

Just got home from work. All I can say is if you can afford to buy booze ( 50 to 100 dollars ) then you don't need food stamps.

Hey!
Wasn't bashing you or anyone else that has/has had genuine need for food stamps/ Bridge Card. What I was referring to is the person who has designer clothes, the latest cell phone, fake nails, hair extensions, and a Cadillac outside waiting while they pay with their bridge card for a can of soup, bag of fritoes, pizza rolls, and microwave dinners. Those people stand out as system abusers, IMHO. As far as your particular case, that is what the bridge card SHOULD be for--people fallen on hard times. You've got nothing to be ashamed of. The people that abuse the system and you are not the same!
Has anyone ever noticed that the people who have bridge cards will buy food for people in exchange for booze. That happens all the time and it is time for this to stop. Bridge cards are for food, not beer.

It is called a Bridge Card because that is the name of the computer system/program they use at the DHS offices.

Like everything else, people are focusing on the few people that abuse a program instead of all the people that need to call on a program that they have contributed to for years. No one really wants to be on it.

I've seen the same. And most of the people I've seen using Bridge Cards are either people driving a better car than I have OR they're all severely over weight...
...which tells me, somethin's not right!
I just got a bridge card with food stamps only. I do need it and will need it if i don't get hired soon!
but n e way you all are right it is very easy to get one. It would be very easy to go in there and lie like if your not a home owner then. You could easily apply and say your homeless even if you say you live in somebody elses home. I got approved I dont know how my life is not that bad I do need the help but i would not die without the help! the thing is it doesnt help you that much. yea you can eat but that doesnt help me find a job in order for that I need gas, a cell phone, and the internet plus on top of that i need to keep my bills up to date. Why dont they just give you a city job like some political job state senate or mayor anyone can do that!

What you can do TKW is write a letter to Governor-elect Rick Snyder about the problem. Ask him to take a look at the "system" and how it is run. I did this, I wrote to him and sent it to his campaign office, never heard back, but hopefully my letter got there because I never got it back either. Good luck in your future endeavors!

Recently I saw the same thing (more or less) at a party store, the kids were buying a bunch of candy. They must have had their parents card and knew the pin number. However, on the bright side, I saw a totatally different story at the grocery store. An older gentlemen was buying exactly the stuff that was needed, and it was all Spartan Brand, nothing name brand. I made a comment to the clerk about how that was how it was suppose to be used, she told me I didn't even want to know about what she sees, and I just said I could just imagine.

People buy whatever the He** they want on food stamps because it ain't their money, it's the State's money and they don't give a rip, so they buy what they want. They buy with the bridge card what they would not buy with their own money.

The Bridge card is called that because there is the bridge on it and it kindof defines what state it's from (Michigan - well known for mackinac bridge).
DHS should put the cash that people get onto a different card. Users can initial payment for whatever they need through card, except alcohol, cigs, etc. Somehow work up a scan system that would allow people to pay bills with this card, but that WON'T allow alcohol, etc to be scanned (paid) with it.
I have the bridge card with food on it only. I lost my job 2 years ago and have been looking. I am not a lazy person that wants hand outs. This was the first time ever that I have been unemployed. I have worked full time all of my life. I don't drive an expensive car, but my savings is almost gone trying to pay for my house.
Don't judge people just because they are using a bridge card - especially without knowing their circumstances.

I'm with Becky...My husband was forced out of his job, so he is not eligible for unemployment. I'm the only one with income and I make $12 an hour, not NEARLY enough to pay the house and all our bills.(Yes, our savings is totally gone and I'm constantly looking for a better paying position.) I need the bridge card, but I use coupons too, so I save a bunch of money for the state and help extend how long I can use my card. I DO NOT use my card for other people in exchange for alcohol or liquor. I know that there are people out there who do this, but that's awful. I do buy SOME candy, but only for my kids. We DO NOT live off candy or fast food. I buy a LOT of fresh veggies and fruit and frozen items. PLEASE do NOT lump me with the few people who abuse the system.
BTW: YES, you are judged when you use the card. I try to use the self checkouts as MUCH as possible.

It's called a "bridge" card because it is supposed to "bridge" the gap for families in need of help (as in between their income and expenses)

you can't use a bridge card to eat at a restaurant or fast food. it is only for non-taxable un-prepared items.

And the Mackinaw Bridge had no meaning to it. It is good for Chips and Ice Cream which I see being purchase by these non tax paying citizens...... Why do we tax unemployment benefits but not Bridge Cards......
