Settlement or not, he skipped out on his bail and has yet to answer for his crime.

I seem to remember that the victim was a she not a he. I think it was 1978 or thereabouts when he was convicted.

I know that a lot of people are saying that he should either be granted clemency or have his sentence reduced to time served (on the lam.)

But, would this send a message that if you can remain a fugitive from justice for over thirty years, you get released?

First he pled guilty. Then he ran. The DA has made several attempts to settle this and Polanski will not cooperate. The victim didn't want to forget it until she got her undisclosed settlement. So not only do we have the original crime but we also have flight to avoid. Bring him back, lock him up on the guilty plea and charge him with the unlawful flight. This perv druged and raped a 13 y/o girl. Normally everyone would be screaming for his head on a platter.

You are right. Otherwise, as I indicated, a fugitive would only have to stay away for three decades and get off. I was not aware of the drugging part. That makes his crime even sicker.

I do not, however, agree with your support of the death penalty. Michigan hasn't had the death penalty since territorial days and only a couple of Federal executions. Why start now?

I heard today that Polanski ran when he heard the judge was not going to stick to a 42 day sentence. That is not an excuse just an explanation.

I herd one news report say it cost more to kill scum than it does to lock them up for life. I can't hardly believe that. Maybe they should by their rope at Ace hardware. ;-)

It not the execution method that costs so much. Its the extra security for death row and even more, the money for appeals and for the state to fight the appeals. Also, most people on death row are those who cannot afford their own lawyer so the state pays for that too. In the end, it is cheaper to imprison somone for life.

I heard the same thing. He had thought he had reached a plea deal and it turned out that he was going to get more time.

Of course Polanski should be returned to the USA to face trial.

Just because he's a Hollywood type, he shouldn't be excused.

I hate to say this because the man evaded justice but after 31 years....why now? I'm sure we could have snagged him a long time ago if we wanted him bad enough. I'm not sure what's behind it all now but I don't think we should spend one nickel of our resources on this guy. I saw an interview with the victim and her attitude was kind of so-so about the whole thing so let it go and move on to more important things.

I agree with you. Let's focus our man hours and resources on dealing with criminals in the present. Let him stay in France, he's lived there for the last 30 years without issue.

He lost his family to the Nazi's and his wife to Manson before her decided to rape a 13 year old. So you're saying if you have had difficult things to deal with in life it's ok to rape someone??????

He raped a 13 year old girl, a little behind bars time more than the 42 days or so he served 40 years ago would do him some good. He only took off after he found out he was getting the hanging judge.
