Just wondering what would happen if I, as support staff" wanted to opt our of our teachers union. Has anyone out there done that here in Michigan?

I believe you can opt out, but you have to donate an equal amount of money (same as your dues) to an agreed upon charity. You still are represented by the union (don't count on immediate or complete representation) in any dispute.

I had a dispute a few years ago with the principal who is a bully. When I presented my problem to the union rep. they told the pricipal who bullied me again because I asked questions. No help there at all.

One only has to listen to Paul Helder @ GRPS open his mouth, and it's all one needs to know about the teacher unions.
He and Robert Gibbs must be related.
Arne Duncan is their cousin twice removed.
A trifecta of incompetence.

In California, I have helped several teacher friends get refunds for the portion of their dues used for political contributions. Also, you can take a "religious exemption" and donate the dues to a charity. The union will try to name the charity, such as Planned Parenthood or some other liberal cause, but there are some notable law firms prepared to fight that for you.

Remember us down here in nonunion states - I am a teacher with a master's degree and 8 years experience teaching core classes and I get paid 40K. I love teaching NONUNION!

District teachers drop out of union, form their own for collective bargaining, and cut dues in half.

I made much more in a union, without the masters... What did they "teach" you, that you're worthless ???
