P.S. According to wikipedia, pregnant mothers who take depakote have children with IQ scores 9 points lower than the control group.

I believe that PTSD in children is the main problem that children have. PTSD comes from trauma plain and simple. It is the result of subtle and not so subtle child abuse from both parents and a very neurotic and borderline psychotic society. Treatments that punish or reward behavior treat people as if they have no felt reality, they dehumanize people and ignore the core problem.
Religion itself is ample reason to believe that society is at least borderline insane, and yet Pine Rest is a "Christian" organization.
But treatments that ignore the traumas that cause the problems are almost inevitable in institutions created by fellow perpetrators of these traumatic events. Treatment which avoids trauma is a trauma inducing element all on its own.
Topping all this off, Pine Rest puts children who have been victims of this strange society into lock up and never begin to treat the core problems either of the children or of the society at large, which it supports even in a "religious" way.
It must be pointed out that in primitive societies high esteem was cast on their "witch doctors" who studied a typical seven years for their "diplomas". They also had claims of effectiveness.
It might do little good to punish Pine Rest for sadly they are the result of a very sick world society and its common beliefs, and of a "science" that clearly is not ready for "prime time".
I suggest strongly that they look into studies concerning PTSD especially as evidenced in children. Also that they consider the work of Arthur Janov who I believe has contributed mightily to this field of study.
Arthur Janov and those who treat for PTSD don't need to call people by made up vague diagnostic names which stigmatize their clients. They find the trauma and attempt to treat it.
Do I sound like I ever needed anti-psychotic medications from a clinic based on religious beliefs and blind dehumanizing "treatments"? I like others mentioned here did WORSE rather than better from this kind of mistreatment, laughingly called "therapy".
I still recall one of the esteemed psychologists there explaining with all kinds of "affectational accouterments" that Jesus was the first computer programmer of the mind. That he had no clue about lower levels of brain function such as FEELING was all too obvious.
Still again, there was the man who became my "friend", the "counselor" who confessed to me that he was "afraid" of me because I was smart. Even the violent didn't frighten him so much as myself.
We have given out way too many meaningless authoritarian paper hats in our country

I was at Pine Rest when Betty was there. I contacted the State of Michigan the day before her death to report abuse to Betty by other patients. However, The State did not have time to respond before Betty died.

Listen, until psychology and psychiatry come out of their tendency to treat and create symptoms and diseases with no known cause or cure they are no more nor less than the State Religion. There is an alternative: http://primaltherapy.com/ Arthur Janov needs your support in his cause friends. Then this nonsense and cruelty and incompetence can end.

My daughter is a patient at Pine Rest right now. My daughter was hit in the face ( by another patient )with a coffee cup and broke her glasses the staff looked my daughter over and decided that my daughter was fine. They did not get any x- rays to make sure there was no fractures my daughter has told the staff that her eye hurts but according to staff she has said nothing about her eye.

My family went thu this with my nephew..He attemted suicide and spend those 5 days twice in one summer.. only to succed on his third try..I agree there is not enuf out there for the Depressed and suicidal loved ones.. this is a terrible loss for any family.. We feel helpless when we couldnt help our loved ones.. and placing them here is our only hope..and not just Pine Rest..Its all of them..Something needs to change to save lives.. not just the ones that take place in the hospitals..
. I too have a daughter that suffers with mental illness . I feel empathy for anyone that has mental health issues and their loved ones. As an ex employee I can say that PineRest administration and management does not listen to the nursing concerns.Units are consistently understaffed with sometimes incompetent or under trained individuals.I am sorry but not surprised that this happened. Until administration learns to listen and validate their employees this organization puts at risk every patient that walks through the door.
