Should Spanking Your Child Be Illegal?

Full story: WZZM Grand Rapids

Massachusetts lawmakers say a proposed measure that would ban parents from spanking their children, even in their own homes, is a way to protect kids from abuse.

No! Spanking should not be illegal! I'm sick and tired of this! The schools even preach this to the kids at school. Telling the kids that parents aren't allowed to spank their kids. I do not spank my kids because of this. So right now my 12 year old thinks that she can do whatever her little heart desires and not get in to trouble. Well she is learning the hard way now, even though I don't spank her, she never thought of groundings! She's on punishment as we speak for walking to Burger King during 2nd hour. 4 weeks of not playing on the computer and not allowed to use the phone is seeming to straighten her tail out right now. But she might wise up and think other things down the road.
I would love to be able to spank her! She needs one here and there it seems like!
The schools are actually telling kids their parents aren't allowed to s.pank them? I did not know that it was already illegal! This is ridiculous. So if you do s.pank your kid and they go to school and tell a teacher will a cop show up at your door?

Spanking should not be illegal but.... Breaking bones, leaving marks, giving black eyes that is not right. Spanking for bad school work no way, sassy mouth, disobeying, fighting, yes

Right. But I think this was really just about s.panking for discipline not a child abuse issue. Some people think that any s.panking at all is child abuse. It is not. And I really think that the people that don't s.pank their kids ever have some really disrespectful, sassy, talk-backing h.ellians.

Not a cop, CPS will show up if the school calls them. For the past few years my kids would come home and tell me, my teacher said that if you ever were to spank us all we have to do is tell our teacher. Its not illegal, but it causes parents like me not to spank my children at all. I don't want to deal with CPS or the cops with anything. And yes it is really meant for kids who are truly abuse but kids make it a different situation that is really is.

What I meant is kids think spanking is abuse, they don't know what real abuse is. Only the ones who are truly abused know what being abused is like.

I totally understand where you are coming from. I certainly wouldn't want CPS showing up at my door or at school because I may swat my kid on the rear once. And you are totally right about kids twisting it to make it worse than it is. Our kids really have no clue what it means to be abused. So what do we do? Because if a kid knows you're not going to s.pank them because they can "tell" on you then it seems like they are in control. So they think they are going to be able to get away with anything. I guess one way to really make them think is to take away priveleges especially the ones really important to them. Does that make sense?

Boy oh boy I know all about this right here. My kids too have said that if I s.panked them they would tell. They are younger and I told them go right ahead. Seriously Go right ahead and when the Police or people come out and see what you do to each other and how you act at times they will not do a thing about it. I actually tell them that the police will have a good talking to them when they hear that they punched their little sister or kicked her in the face.( this doesn't happen all the time)

I may come off as harsh to some, but OMG it can be so crazy in my house. My kids have been through so much and they need to be disiplined with love. We as parents have the right to raise them they way we chose as long as it is not harmful.

Funny thing is, when our children do something they shouldn't do we get the blame. Look at any teen that does something wrong and the parents are the first to be blamed. Something is wrong with that picture...

I have spanked my children and been unfortunate enough to have to deal with CPS. But then again the CPS worker that came to my house told me that spanking is not illegal as long as you do not leave a mark that lasts for over 24 hours. I do not spank my children often actually hardly ever as I have found that taking things they like away is a better punishment but if they endanger their own lives or someone else's I am going to spank their behinds.
I do not take it too far and have never left a mark on my child and I have fully explained every time I did spank them why I did it.
My children have learned from the few that they have gotten never to repeat the things they did to deserve them. Like I said I also talked to them and explained why I felt that a spanking was what was needed in the few times they have gotten one.

They want to make spanking illegal because child abusers obey the law?

All it takes is one phone call from somone accusing you of something and CPS WILL show up! And those people do NOT want to believe anything a parent says. To them you are guilty until proven innocent. Try to prove a negative sometime!
