This is what is wrong with kids today....they aren't getting punished and they are running all over their parents!

I got spanked plenty when I was a kid. It was never without warning and believe me I had plenty of chances to avoid it but as a kid you keep running your mouth, don't listen, keep doing what you shouldn't do. It was part of teaching me to respect (not fear as so many think it will) my parents. It taught me as a child who was boss...and that actions have consequences.

I have no problem with a parent giving their kid a swift swat on the behind if they deserve it. If more people still did it maybe this world wouldn't be going down the tubes!

Oh, and it is sad that if your child lets go of your hand in a parking lot and tries to dart out into traffic, that you can't spank them then and there because some goody-two-shoes will call you in for abuse! Abuse is NOT a swat on the behind. If you think it is then you are only contributing to the problems in society today.

There is a line between spanking and child abuse. My parents never crossed it, and neither did I. I gurantee you if my grandkids act up they will get a swat on the behind.
Maybe if the 12 year old who took the gun to school got a spanking, he never would have taken it in the first place.
I agree with Dispatch Jim, when he states the people who write these laws don't have kids of their own.
Couldn't agree more. And that being said, I can count on one hand the times both of my children were spanked.

Well people not spanking today is probably why you see all kinds of misbehaved children running around. Think about how much better we were all behaved because we got spanked 20+ years ago. I'm not saying beat to where it leaves a mark, but to where it gets the childs attention to let them know the adult is in charge.

I don't agree that the government should have that much control over how we disapline our children.

<quoted text>what does education have to do with it ? people need to teach thier children wright from wrong and some times a spanking is needed.there is a big diferance between spanking and beeting.if my child does something that is dangerious

Apparently education didn't do you well enough to respond to this issue with correct grammar. Maybe the person you responded to has a point about education.

Spanking is not the use of a belt in My opinion as shown on the channel 13 news topic.

To me, spanking is one swat on the bottom to make a point. Not the use of a belt, and not to inflict pain or damage.

Making spanking illegal will solve nothing. Teaching parents how to discipline their children will.

No spanking should not be illegal. What should be illegal is how you spank a child (one or two wacks on the a** v 10 to 50 wacks on the a**) and what you use to spank a child with. Belt, wooden spoon and ect.

I choose to spank my children for major things. I should be able to choose to or not. Since people have started worrying about how other people disapline their kids teenage violence has been on the rise. When I was growing up a gun in school was unheard of. Now their is not even a gasp, what is the world comming to when people pay more attention to how disapline is administered instead of the results of no disapline. Talking is fine but what happens when something else is needed. I was in a store when the report came out today about the two kids fighting over an Ipod. I was apalled at the lack of disgust. I heard "Another kid brought a gun to school" THIS SHOULD BE NORMAL BEHAVIOR! There is a fine line between disapline and abuse but since people have been removing corporal punishment from the disiplinary practice teenage violence has been getting worse and people are starting to act like it is the norm. This is just disgusting.

Lawmakers are NOT elected to micro manage people's lives. The government should provide security, infrastructure, make law but not get involved in such issues. Get back to the business of the people and MYOB!

Growing up as the oldest of 5, my mom was not in favor of spanking her kids. My dad on the other hand, believed his kids should be spanked depending on the severity of the situation. I watched as my siblings walked all over my mom and do not show her the respect she deserves as a mother. My dad on the other hand was respected. I told both my parents I did not love my dad any less for spanking me when I deserved it as a child, in fact, I respected him more.
I don't believe in hitting a child on the face, that can be damaging. Spanking beyond a certain age, can also be emotionally damaging. Spanking too often is probably harmful. Still, parents should be able to decide when, where, & how often. Others who interact with the child will more than likely be emotionally intelligent enough to tell if a child is being abused.

Spank the kids, make -em brave! Because when they see what the crooked RepubliCONS have done to this country they will need to be strong, especially when they get the bill for the war based on Limbaugh lies,,,, maybe 76K per child in todays terms?? You gotta go Joe

I think that children should only be spanked between the 1st and 5th of each month and only when the moon is in full. They should only be spanked with a bare open hand bearing down at approximately 7.5 foot-pounds of torque. The child must be wearing a pair of 100% cotton underwear, color must be blue. If diapers are worn, brand name must be either Pampers or Luvs.(Huggies cause enough rashes as it is without a spanking.) The child should only be spanked after he/she has been spoken to 11 or more times to do something or to cease doing something.
So, is this what we are headed for?
Lisa, I am laughing so hard!! You should send this to the genius who came up with the stupid law!

BTW, you are SO right about the Huggies! lol!

It don't matter what you people think. You can talk all you want, even to our government elected, until you are blue in the face. What it comes down to, is the government runs your life, and there is nothing you can do about it!

I agree with Beth 100%!!!

Somebody once told me that the first swat was for the benefit of the child, and anything thereafter was only a benefit for the parent.

It's my job as a parent to discipline my children, not the gov't. And if more parents took the time to dicipline their kids, we wouldn't have all of the trouble with the kids that we do today. Just my opinion.

I think that, just as with pretty much anything, something in excess is bad. I am all for spanking- I am also all for time-outs, withholding of rewards, postive reinforcement, etc.
But too much of any of those things can have anegative effect.
Balancing out the appropriate punishment or reward is what is key...
