Dumb! Anyone who knows how to cook or bake knows that you always check inside the oven before you turn it on.

Luckily no one was hurt, but I'm sure the RA was really embarrassed. Hopefully she learned a lesson.

thanks for reporting on this fire news 8, Ill remember this story when other communities have fires and you dont report on them, including ones that burn complete houses to the ground and firefighters get hurt, but its not important cuz its not in GR or at the college.

I believe that they reported on this because of the high life safety hazard at colleges. There are many students under one roof in dorm buildings. There have also been several multiple fatality fires in college dorms in recent years. Any time there is a fire at a dorm, no matter how small it may seem at the time, the potential is there for a major incident. Remember, many of these students are away from home for the first time in their lives, and don't have a great deal of familiarity with their new surroundings.

I was super impressed by the response time for Marne. Marne had their truck and guys at Allendale before the majority of the Allendale trucks (only 1 Allendale truck had arrived). All in all..GREAT JOB GUYS!

There isnt a lot of room on the counters in these rooms.. trust me. We have to be able to make space in the amount of counterspace we are given in these dorms. So by placing that in the oven she was probably trying to make space on her counter and keep things out of the way.

Holy cow, you're whole life is in a 10x12 foot room and you people wonder how a dishwasher rack might end up in an oven? The counter space probably gets used a whole lot more than the oven, so using it as occasional storage makes sense. Then she just forgot to look - it's not the end of the world. Had it not been in a dorm room, no one would have ever known - I doubt this is the first time something like this has happened!

When I walked out of my dorm today I was like, what in the world is going on? There were fire trucks, ambulances, and police everywhere and everyone was crowded around Kleiners. Then someone told me a RA was trying to bake cookies in the oven with a dishwasher rack...silly RA. I'm glad no one was hurt.

I fully understand all of this and appreciate them for putting it on the news. My complaint is not with this particular story, its the fact that news 8 chooses to put this fire story on the news, but when there is a major fire in other communities and fire fighters have actually been hurt or people in the building, they choose to turn their heads because its not news to them, its not in GR so its not news.
Thats why I was so surprised they put this one on air and on here.
I have a personal issue with this subject and my local dept has literally been totally and completely ignored for many years but local news and honestly it angers me to no end. Not to mention how many times a week our dept goes to apartment buildings where the call comes in saying its an apt fire, building evacuated, only to find out once again for about the 10th time that week, it was only burnt food.
Get my point? None of those make it on the news, and its still a full building of people.
Im sure Allendale did a fine, quick job & fast response, I applaud all fire fighters, no matter where they are, its a tough job.

Why not just keep the dishwasher rack in the dishwasher? Duh....
I didn't go to college and I know enough to do that.
