I think it quite disgusting how some people use utility poles to advertise their event or product. Some poles have so many staples in them that they are almost metalized enough to be considered a lighting rod. Others have enough tape on them to wrap a life time's worth of Christmas gifts.

I understand that this is illegal but a call to city hall revealed that no one really knew with whom to file a complaint.

Of all offences, this one should be easy enough to enforce since the violators leave their name and most often their phone number on the paper. There can't be over several dozen outfits that make a practice of doing this and so it should not be that big of deal to reign in.

Gee, Fred...lost pets, garage sales, college house painters, local bands trying to drum up some business. Yep, those SOB's should be taken out and shot :)

And what about those pesky, obtrusive lemonade stands, hmmm? LOL

I especially like the oversized cardboard signs that are perfectly eye level so when you pull up to a corner you can't see oncoming traffic.

Cmon, its talk like that which gives us gun owners a bad name, we have to be more civilized now that Obama is president, we no longer need to shoot our enemies. Just give them a hug and ask them nicley not to do it again. ;)

You obviousely have no idea how devastating this kind of vandalism can be. I once had my pole taped and stapled...it was horrible.

Oh stop it.

Those polls have been used for DECADES for those purposes. It doesn't matter if it advertising a garage bands first gig, a photo of a lost cat or a yard sale.

In all of the years it has been done, no one has died and no telephone pole has been damaged to the ravages of a lightening bolt because of the staples used to hold them there.

And if you knew anything about lightening, you would know that it doesn't need metal as an excuse to strike something.

The city isnt going to do beans, because IT WOULD BE A PR DISASTER. It is nothing but a busybody spinster ordinance for no other reason other than to satisfy someone's pet peeve eruption.

As long as the signs are taken down or wear off, no one is going to care.

I could care less about the poles. It's when these idiots come through a neighborhood and leave those yard signs in MY yard to advertise their business. I've disposed of three so far this month. I wish one of them would come back and ask what happened to the sign. But since they do this in the middle of the night, I don't see that happening any time soon.

All I ask is please clean up after yourself. Other than that I kinda like seeing how creative people can be with their signs.

Granted, I don't live in the city and have to see them every day, but when I drive by I kind of enjoy all the posters and band fliers.

What looks like crap is when somebody tries to yank them off and can't get everything.

Okay people, here is another view. Lowell's city council 'banned' signs attached to poles and stuck in the ground along the city property. Their idea was that these 'garage sale' signs dirty up the city. Particularly because many signs were just abandoned after the sale was done. Now people park their cars on main street on occassion with HUGE signs plastered to the windows "Garage sale" with arrows & address.

So please, tell me, which looks worse? In reality, all they had to add an ordanance that stated signs had to be pulled within so many hrs or you'd get a 'fine'. And since most of the times the address is on there or can be traced to the local ad it would be easy enough to enforce. They could have put the Sr group on enforcement and let them split the fines.

I think that tap is running dry, Dutch. Kalifornia, GITMO, these stupid plans of green power and wind turbines, more ACORN crimes being uncovered, and unemployment growing, deficit growing...etc.
Obama can hold speeches in an echo chamber surrounded by replica Constitutions and Declarations all he wants, but eventually his wacky dreams of a socialist America are going to one by one run headlong into reality and people will start to realize his rhetoric is nothing more than empty promises and dangerous philosophies.

And you can tack that to every utility pole in the U.S.!

I remember mot long ago a man drove a nail into the plastic casing attached to the wood pole and took out the power for a large area, I guess he didnít realize there were power lines running under there. I think that was right here in Grand Rapids. Fortunately he wasnít hurt. Think of the hazards this causes to the lineman that has to climb these poles.

It is against the law. Either the law should be enforced or changed. It should be considered littering bearing a $500 fine which would make the enforcement effort worthwhile.

Well for one, advertising in the paper is EXPENSIVE! Number two...just how many people get the paper anymore since comp.? I do not see ANYTHING wrong with advertising on the poles. What do we use them for? The fact of putting signs in somebodys yard is just WRONG! Put them out by the corner. I never knew this was illegal? Well I found out the hard way that SWEARING on a voice mail/answering machine was illegal so go figure! I guess from now on I will just start dropping all my stuff off at GoodWill!...=0)There, problem solved!

You just need to simmer down a little!
Besides, the stuff you leave at Goodwill, people just buy it, and then sell it on e-bay!
Believe me I know all about that!
