Full story: WOOD-TV Grand Rapids and Michigan

When Kraig Millsap was killed by a hit-and-run driver in December, his family and friends put up a roadside memorial at the location.

and not to be insensitive also but he didn't die there... he died later at the hospital.

But... the memorial is kept neat & clean so if the property owner does not object, at least it's not over the top (compared to the one around the corner...)

I still say if the accident was in my yard, the family could have a memorial there as long as they wanted.

Their need for a memorial trumps my need for a perfect yard.

That's very sweet of you. I suppose it may depend on where a person lives. I live in the city. Frankly I wouldn't want my kids to play around a memorial either. Nothing wrong with you doing that nor is there anything wrong with me wanting to not turn my own yard into somebody elses memorial.

I live in town very close to a cemetery :)

I can understand people not wanting to be reminded of death in their own yard- we just take a little more "natural" look at it.

My daughter feels sympathy when she sees me visiting the grave of an old friend or comforting people I see there (small town- we all know each other), she doesn't seem uncomfortable.

Sorry. Not a chance I'd want that for myself. I would want those who love me to focus on the life I lived, not on the way I died. Everyone has lost or will lose someone they love. It's part of life. We simply don't have enough space on the planet to eternally memorialize every person wherever they die. Yes, it's sad. Yes, we all feel bad for your loss - but rationality has to take over at some point.

My kids go to the cemetery regularly with me and they have no problem with that. But I wouldn't want the view or responsibility of some other families 'memorial'. I wouldn't want my kids playing baseball around it or getting skewered by some cross stuck in the ground. Just doesn't seem the proper place for it. And on my end, I can't imagine wanting to go to some strangers front yard to mourn over the loss of a loved one. That is what cemeteries are for or even memorials in ones yard.:) Plant a tree in a park for goodness sakes.

Cemetaries are the appropriate place for a memorial, not a roadside. Or if one needs a daily reminder, a jar of ashes in one's own home. I believe a memorial should be a private thing, not a public display.

I disagree with these roadside memorials. If someone dies in a hospital, through surgical error or whatever, do you put up a memorial in the hospital room or hallway? no...

I own a property in Ohio. I was clearing it out and fixing it up to rent out. THere was a fatal accident there and 2 people were killed.
There are now 2 memorials there, one on each wall.
I NEED to rent this place, it is draining me of money every month, and I am unemployed.
I cannot show the place with these memorials on the sides of the building. It is encraching on the front door making it difficult to get in and out of the building.
WHat can I do? They leave candles burning there with all the stuffed animals, and pictures, it is a fire hazzard.
Truthfully, I want it out, the sooner the better.
WHat is the length of time to leave this stuff up?
Is there any protocal in dealing with this?

If the memorial is far enough the road so it is not in anyones line of vision, then leave it alone.
