The Grand Rapids Police Dept. is not helping anyone by lying in wait by the side of the road hoping that someone makes a mistake by going through a red light, and then stopping them to in essence take $135.00 from them by issuing a ticket; what is the difference between the Police taking $135.00 from you, and a person holding you up for the same amount; the only difference is that hopefully, the Police officer will not point a gun at your head in order to take the money, otherwise the results are the same. The Grand Rapids Police Dept. should have better things to do rather than taking advantage of unsuspecting individuals who think that lying in wait by the side of the road in order to see if individuals make a mistake, is a cowards way of making money; there is no honour in this type of behavior; if the Grand Rapids Police would like respect from the citizens of Grand Rapids, then they have to devise another way to make money. Perhaps you shouldn't be running red lights?

I have to say I agree traffic fines are way to high and who the heck determines what the fines are and really where does all that money go? I am sure someone can tell me where its supposed to go but I believe no one really knows..

If you obey the traffic laws and don't run red lights, you have nothing to worry about. Disregard them and you get to pay your fair share of stupid tax. BTW...the difference between the cop writing you a ticket and the thief robbing you? The former is enforcing the law and the latter is breaking it. Mistakes have consequences, some more painful and costly than others. Man up and quit whining about it.

40+ years ago I was traveling south on Monroe after picking my brother up from work just after midnight; just as I entered the intersection of Monroe and Michigan/Bridge the light turned yellow. Approaching the intersection I saw a GR police car at the light facing south on Michigan and said oh oh when I saw the light change. I'd gotten almost down to where Lakos was when he turned his lights on.

The short of it is, when he got to my car he said I had run a yellow light. When He came back from his car and handed me the ticket it said, ran a red light and light was red before reaching the intersection.

Of course my witness was of no use as he had another cop with him also. Which he was sure to let me know about.

My father grew up in GR and even tough he had several connections with local governments and especially the Kent County Sheriff he said the Grand Rapids Police Department had been corrupted and crooked from back when he was a young man.

The only time I go into Grand Rapids City proper is if something is going on I really want to do that that's the only venue.

Make it look as pretty as they want. It's still not a friendly place unless you have the money to give them. Talking about the City. Not necessarily the people. It's a town for making money first and foremost.

If that is truly how you feel.....we might hope that you become an active participant in more armed robberies and less, stressful traffic citations......

So you got a ticket 40+ years ago and you hold that against Grand Rapids to this day??? I guess if you're only interaction with a city is from the business end of a citation it stands to reason you'd be jaded.
I go in GR proper as much as I can and it's damned fun. Of course I'm not looking at it through piss-colored hatred because I got a speeding ticket 5 years ago that I didn't think I deserved.

Cops can be pricks. Happens all over the country.

That was just once instance I encountered with the Grand Rapids Police where they outright broke the law for gain.

I'm not going to get into an entire history simply to satiate your desire to be a combatant.

I'm just so tickled you go to Grand Rapids as often as you can and it's damned fun. woohoo.

Well hell SIB, you really have nothing good to say about anything, so heaven forbid everyone isn't as miserable as you.
Try not running red lights and you might not have to deal with the police. Or are you going to say it's a race thing? Boohoooo.

Did you even read what I wrote jackwad? I clearly stated the light turned yellow as I entered the intersection. According to the LAW going through a yellow light, when there is not room to stop before it turns red is not an infraction. AND stupid I said the cop acknowledged the light was yellow and wrote the ticket as running a red light and the light was red before reaching the intersection.

If I had stopped when the light turned yellow I would have been IN the intersection and gotten ticketed for obstruction of traffic.

Why do you enjoy being so patently stupid?

Interestingly enough there is a scientific study that proves that out.

Well actually it says there are biological causes for conservatives to be conservative and liberals to be liberal.

That same 'little error' could just as easily cost your or someone else their life instead of just getting a ticket, but by all means drive as a fast as you like and push the lights just because you have a problem with authority. Might explain why several intersections in Grand Rapids are in the top 10 for accidents in the state; lots of people like you think traffic laws are stupid or just suggestions. Maybe we should go to a system like DC where a camera snaps a picture of your license plate when you run a light and you get a ticket in the mail?
So tell me...when someone runs a red light and kills a family member will you still be calling it a 'little error'?

You don't need a study to prove it.
'topix' is evidence enough that they can't cope with the way things are.
They can't survive without their gods (Beck, Limbaugh, popeman, etc....) telling them how to think.

I work downtown..drive through it every working day of the week. Strange how I've never been ticketed. You'd think if it was that bad, I'd have been nailed by them by now. In fact, I've gotten exactly two tickets in my entire life, neither of them in Grand Rpaids, and I deserved both of them. At least I'll admit it rather than whining about how unfair it was.

As long as it's a regressive, who cares?
