Full story: WOOD-TV Grand Rapids and Michigan

An online way for unemployed Michigan residents to make their bi-weekly contact with the Unemployment Insurance Agency is coming but it's only being tested right now.

Thanks for the info... Too bad the UIA workers are telling people they can use the site now. It seems like you get different answers from each UIA employee. They need to get their story straight.

CHECKS? you don't get checks anymore. you get a stupid debit card from chase bank that you have to keep until it expires like a regular bank card. if you want to get cash from it you have to either use an atm, or go to the bank and PAY A FEE to withdraw the money using a bank teller. and if you use the atm, you can't always get the exact $ amount on the card, so you either pay a fee and go in the bank or use it at a store or lose your $.

I was laid off near the end of October. It has taken me over 40 attempts each time to get through to MARVIN. The HELP number to inquire about a problem is worthless. We have been trying to get through to the HELP number since the first of November. On Tuesday this week, we kept hitting redial throughout the day; over 150 times just to see what would happen. We never got through. In October,we received one week of pay on our debit card but then changed it to direct deposit and did not get paid again until this morning. 9 weeks of nothing.

Michigan unemployment is a joke. You better know how to file a claim online or you wont be able to file one!

I was unable to get through to MARVIN on Monday. I decided to go there in person. The lady that worked with me toldme to use the make up days (thursday and friday) next time I miss my appointment. I told her I didn't miss my appointment. I was trying to call but couldnt get through.
That was Monday. Today I got my check in mail for the two weeks I have been off a long with a partial week that I never got paid for back in November. I was told that this wold be the last of the paper checks.

Working with the SYSTEM... I have been collecting UIA and the EUC benefits for 1 year...The Congress passing of EUC added anothr Tier of benefits in the amount collectible of 13 weeks.(13 weeks because we in Michigan have a Unemployment Rate over 6.5) That was in November...now we are even at a higher rate of unemployment.

I give credit to the Michigan Unemployment Services for their efforts. The possibility of a "ONLINE" reporting to the MARVIN system will eventually alieviate this current bottleneck of claimants and the telephone will be just another avenue to make you UIA claim and not the "PAIN in the NECK' that it has recently become.
So, I suggest you get the INTERNET FACT SHEET of the website www.michigan.gov/uia and apply ONLINE.

JUST REMEMBER; HAVE ALL YOUR DATES,PERSONAL INFO, AND QUARTERLY WAGE AMOUNTS AT YOUR FINGER TIPS AND THEN WITH A PATIENCE THAT IS FOCUSED YOU WILL GET TO THAT DESERVED UNEMPLOYMENT CHECK.

Today I had the opportunity to access Marvin online to certify the past two weeks for unemployment , as a matter of fact, at approximate 10:15 a.m. I did not have any problems compared to accessing Marvin through the phone lines. It took me about 3 minutes to do, was very easy to follow the directions, and found that if the systems cannot handle the amount of unemployed workers that access Marvin online, the state needs to address those issues. However, I agree with the above posts in the frustration that they are facing.

I did not opt to have a debit card when I filed my claim. I did not opt to have the check mailed to me either. I chose the option to have the funds directly deposited into my bank account. I monitor my bank activity and know each time Marvin tells me at the end of certification when the funds will be sent.

As for running out of funds, I heard a report of that sometime last week. But so far, I am receiving my funds.

If Marvin online can handle the amount of workers, I actually think it is great that the state has done something to worthwhile for us unemployed.

Why would you think that was at all true? Don't spread panic with ridicules urban legends. The unemployment office is already a tinder box.

What happens when you mix up your week. Do you call the 800 # or call on your regularly scheduled time. I can never get a hold of anyone.
How can you get the time you lost back. Can you help with another number to call or something?
Thank you,

Help...anyone.

I was scheduled to call marvin Monday morning, but all of the lines were busy. So on Tuesday when Woodtv announced Marvin online was available, I immediately claimed my unemployment online. Now woodtv is saying Marvin is not ready. Should I try calling Marvin tomorrow during the "Open" hours? When I went online Marvin accepted my claim but didn't give me any Dollar amount I will receive, I'm kinda worried and don't know what I should do.
My bills are pileing up and running out of food.
Any advice.... anyone? Thanks

Candice - You don't get a half day every two weeks. You get one hour on your assigned date based on their schedule which is determined by your last 3 digits of your social security number. If you miss that day, Thursday and Friday are open reporting gays on the phone system. You can call anytime during the hours of MARVIN operation and make your report. You are NOT locked into one time peroid every two weeks.

Resident - You have THREE choices for receiving your unemployment benefits. You can use the debit card method, you can still get a physical check OR you can have te funds direct deposited ino your checking account. ou ca chnge this optionoline usng the links provided by other articles posted on WOODV 8's website.

auntnana - THe Fedral overnment passed an extension plafor unemployment benefits. There are plenty of funds available for states that qualify. Michigan is one of the states to benefit from that package. Two extensions were included. The current one now in effect is for an additional 20 week extension followed by and additional extension of 13 weeks at the end of this current extension. The new relief package that will be signed into law when Obama comes into office is also supposed to incude yet another unemployment benefits extension. There has been no information released on how long this additional package would cover.

Ellen - If you mix up your week, you should still call in and report normally according to information on the website. If you do miss a week, you'll have to have a justifiable reason for missing the call. If you simply forgot that may not be good enough, which is why I keep a calendar next to my computer with the dates clearly marked on it so I don't miss a week.

Unemployed worker - If you were not given a dollar amount at the end of the online session, it did not accept your information. Use the make up days on Thursday and Friday and try to call in. Or use the 800 help number to try and get an answer or come to Grand Rapids and visit the regional help office on Plainfield to talk to someone in person. Best to arrive early like 6 AM if you don't want to spend the day in line with hundreds of others in the cold temps.

If the unemployment office would let us email questions about our personal account it would also help. You people are right they tell different stories to each of us. If you try the 800 number they give you it is impossible to get through and then they are rude. We all need to email Granholm and complain. I know they will call you if you report you are having a problem with the unemployment agency as I have done it but it needs to be hundreds complaining to get something done,,,,,,get busy and email now.

My son waited over three months for his first check. Fortunately he had me to help him pay his rent and bills while he waited, but most people cannot call on mommy to pay their bills. The system sucks, I mean who can go three months without getting paid. People could lose their homes waiting!
