Conservatives: becareful as you read this as you will find out that Reagan was actively anti-gun and the black panthers fought hard for their Second Amendment rights. You will also find out that the NRA used to be a reletively solid organization that wasn't opposed to regulations and wanted to stay out of politics. It was only about 30 years ago that they morphed into the window lickers they are today.

That's it Batch, put your fingers in your ears and scream BLAH BLAH BLAH--I CAN'T HEAR YOU! like a child...and bash the source.

Everything in that article was spot on. Unlike some of the sources you use Adam Winkler is a trusted columnist and also a professor of constitutional law at UCLA. I thought this article was neutral and didn't lean left or right, just facts.

Could someone tell me why Obama is asking for extensive background checks for firearms, but if we ask for his background we are just a bunch of crazy racist?

In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
----------
Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.
----------
China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
----------
Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
----------
Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
----------
Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million 'educated' people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
----------
Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million.
So it might be said that guns don't kill people, gun control does!

You've lost me. What does any of this have to do with the article?

No one is looking to disarm the populace. No one and no matter what you say it won't change the facts. I liked the NRA better before they were a factory of fear and senseless propaganda.

Did Reagan hate the 2 Amendment too? Did you piss your pants when Reagan wanted sensible gun laws too? Doubt it.

And it was the Republicans that supported the rights of Blacks and the Democrats who fought tooth and nail to oppress the Blacks.

In 1963 the Democratic Governor Wallace said at his inauguration
In the name of the greatest people that have ever trod this earth, I draw the line in the dust and toss the gauntlet before the feet of tyranny, and I say segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.

At the time, who would have ever predicted the Democratic Party would elect a Black, pro-abortion, anti-business pot head from Hawaii.

Times and positions change.

What will happen over the next 50 years is anyone's guess.

What does gun control mean? It should mean that those who shouldn't own a firearm be kept from obtaining one. We do know they skirt the law anyways, so any law that doesn't address the potential of acquirement of firearms by those who shouldn't own one but rather attacks the firearm itself is a bogus argument. Magazine bans and so-called assault weapons bans are nothing more than feel-good utopian approaches to a deeper problem. Go right ahead and close the gun show loophole. Most Americans agree with that. Make mental illness a full part of NICS and throw the book at those who use firearms in a commission of a crime. No more of this plea bargained crap! The lefts tired approach on this issue is repetitive and focuses on the wrong target (pun intended).

Let's just admit that all gun control laws are unconstitutional and the supreme court will throw out this bunch of laws just like they have all previous attempts to infringe on the rights granted in the second amendment!

Oh, wait......

I don't care about gun control in other countries. I don't care about your desperate attempts to try and tie taking the Jews guns away and holocaust. What do gun laws in any other country have to do with the discussion at hand? Did you read the article?

The article was about gun control in this country from the founding fathers and their belief that guns were an important part of liberty (but also believed they should be strictly controlled), to the evolution of the NRA over the last 30 years or so.

Whatever happened in other countries has nothing to do with gun control in the US. Nothing. No one---no president, no congress, no judge is ever going to disarm the American populace. Your fear of this is and your constant claim that any gun law starts the slippery slope is nothing more than hyperbole. You people with your manufactured, outrageous, fear and anger look ridiculous to us sensible Americans.

Most people feel that there is no need for extended clips or weapons that can easily be converted to fully automatic to be sold to any Tom, Dick or Harry. No where in the constitution does it guarantee you right an carry around any weapon you choose. No where does it say that gun laws can't be changed or that certain weapons can't be restricted.

Boy, do they ever. That's why anyone who buys into this whole democratic-republican 'thing' should have their head examined. Republicans in the past were progressives and dems were the regressives if you will.

For me the differences aren't about whether someone has an R or a D next to their name but if they are tied to the future or the past. There is nothing more depressing that watching someone try to desperately hang on to the corpse of the past.
