It is sad to see the reduction to the Newspaper and its wages, just another reminder that this economy is hurting a lot of people. we canceled our subscription because the content was substantially less and the cost had increased.

Does anyone else find it weird that WOODTV would post a story about the GR Press cutting wages and benefits, then they pick a picture of the newspaper to use for the story that the headline says "Money, draft picks are there for the Lions". Glad money is there for someone!

It's become a vicious circle. Lower circulation, raises cost of paper produces even lower circulation which reduces ads which raises paper price again which reduces circulation again which reduces ads, and around around she goes where she stops is no more printed paper.

Dont believe that. Back in 2007 they cut carriers with buyouts and the ones that stayied had there pay cut in half. This is nothing new for the Press. The Press put millions in a new building and press and could not figure out how to run it. To this day that is still haunting them and also more people are going to the internet for there news and info. Much faster. So after loosing a great job with the Press in 2007 I dont believe them at all. The Press has not figured out how to run things. They lost a lot of customers when they put in the new press and papers where hours late. But the Press ALWAYS blamed the it on the carriers.

That really sucks. My husband took a job as a carrier during one semester last year(he's a full-time student). His WALKING route was seven miles long, seven days a week, and paid crappy already. That and the press sends a letter with the carrier's contact info, asking if you have special instructions about where you want your paper. You would not believe the instructions people have - very few are willing to have it put in a press box - almost everyone has a "special spot". And if you forget - you know, having over two hundred customers on weekends that you have to deliver to in the dark - you get complaints from the main office. And people think that a two dollar tip is generous. I cringe to think how those poor people still doing that could possibly be making any less.

Oh - and the carriers are independent contractors - no benefits, no vacation, etc.

Lovely world, isn't it?

Heraldo - You do know that the G.R. Press is OWNED by Advance Newspapers, right?
From Wikipedia: "Booth Newspapers is presently owned by Advance Publications (a Samuel I. Newhouse property). Booth Newspapers owns the Ann Arbor News, Bay City Times, Flint Journal, Grand Rapids Press, Jackson Citizen Patriot, Kalamazoo Gazette, Muskegon Chronicle, and Saginaw News, as well as Advance Newspapers in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area."
That's like saying if WOOD-TV canned Brian Sterling, maybe he could get a job with WOTV 4(1)...

It's funny how companies decide when things are bad and they have to make cuts, etc, that the best thing to do is raise the price of their product. I'm not sure what the weekday price is for the GR Press but I believe the Sunday paper is now $2 and sure to go higher. I haven't bought any of their papers in more than a year. When you continually cut content and shrink the size of the product, regardless of what you're selling, and then raise the price people don't exactly come flocking to buy your product. I have subscribed to the USA Today for years but their prices have also gone through the roof and once it's up for renewal I won't get it again. Very soon the GR Press will become an online paper only and at some point all of these newspapers are going to start to charge you to look at it online as their main source of revenue, advertising, is getting smaller every day.

Frankly, I only keep the paper out of habit and that could change any minute. Like everyone else's job, you have to keep up with the times and try and stay a step ahead. Does the Press let you order your subscription online? You can't always blame the economy. If carriers are out of jobs, it really isn't the economy's fault. Was everyone up in arms when horse sales were down when everyone was getting a car? Got to stay with the times.

The dinosaurs who run the paper had better wake up and begin to have some sort of presence on the web. It seems obvious that not having any product on the web has not helped them.

The Holland Sentinel owns regional coverage on the web, and the GR Press? Still stuck in last century, why is that? How has that helped them?

The GR Press isn't even worth the paper its printed on... I used to help with a motor route and the pay was sofa king pathetic. Make it a 1 day a week paper, or hell, make it toilet paper.

newspapers all over the country are experiencing similar problems or worse. it is the same for the traditional newscasts also. one major reason and you are participating as you read this, the internet. today you can get news from all over the world real time from the comfort of your home/office. no need to wait for 6 pm or delivery of todays paper. hopefully the gr press can hang on. it is a good newspaper.

Hopefully soon, another liberal slanted rag that will shut down, not because of the economy, but because of lack of readership. Keep slamming the people and businesses that make G.R. what it is.

They are doing what is needed to survive in this New Economy. I do know several people that have dropped the Paper after the last rate increase. They are pricing themselves right out of the market. Higher price and smaller paper ? Not going to make it I'm afraid.

The G.R. Press has gone from being a newspaper to a 2 section leaflet. People are simply getting news online
