The Real Jericho
Yes there is a real Jericho and the town located in Arkansas is in real trouble.
The towns police department has been at the center of attention for a longtime. Accusations of a corrupt police force and speed traps has been going around. Not a hard thing to believe when you discover one resident was ticked for speeding in his driveway and other accused speeders were ticketed outside of the town in the county jurisdiction. This is mild to the events however that have unfolded over the last month or so. The cities Fire Chief Don Payne was shot last month in court by one of the town officers during a verbal argument. Payne decided to take a stand against the accused corrupt police force. A claim now that even the county sheriffs office admits might be true. When Payne left the court house he was informed his son had just been pulled over for speeding as well. After Chief Payne excited the parking lot was pulled over and issued another ticket. Payne went back into the court to complain and it is during this time Payne was challenged by the towns entire police force of five officers. A claim was made that Chief Payne unarmed got into a scuffle with the officers and at that point of them drew his service revolver and shot Fire Chief Payne. Immediately following the incident the presiding judge declared all non paid parking tickets void and step down as a judge. The Police chief fired all the police officers in the town and quit himself leaving the t own with no police force to protect it. The sheriffs office had to step in to cover the town and set up an investigation of their own over the incident. The sheriffs offices has made statements to the fact that it does not now how a town of 184 people can maintain five paid police officers at the same time as having one of it police cars fire trucks repossessed for non payment. Now the latest news out of Jericho states that the Mayor Helen Adams has fired the fire chief. A move Chief Payne who is out of the hospital and still recovering feels was motivated my the shooting. As a sign of unity all the members of the fire department have also walked out. They feel they have not quit the town but, the town has quit them. No charges have been filed against the officer in this case and charges of assault are going to be filed against Fire Chief Payne. Residents of this town have been outraged by both, the police department and the Mayors actions. Now this sleepy town is no longer sleeping at night and is with out any emergency services of its own. Marion Arkansas fire department will now have to pull double duty and cover its own town plus Jericho. After reading the events unfolding over the last month on Firerescue1 online I wonder what justice is left in this world. Shooting of clearly a unarmed man by a police officer is not only unjustified but, is attempted murder by law. Their can be no safety for all if there is no justice to work from. It is clear when a judge quits and the police force is fired and its chief resigns that something is afoul in the air. The people of Jericho deserve to sleep at night knowing they are being protected.
