the police tried to intimidate activists by claiming to arrest him, but in reality the supporters of free speech showed they had more power and Ortiz was released!

for claiming to have free speech rights in mind, the swiftness with which the council threw the cops on somebody exercising those rights proves that they are most interested in suppressing dissent and only maintaining a facade of constitutional protections. of course, the fact that the council granted police license to injure and potentially demonstrators with bullets and chemical weapons, confiscate and destroy the cameras of protesters and media members alike, and create intentional delays in medical assistance already shows that they've declared war on twin cities residents in advance of the RNC.

No they did not declare war on the citizens of the twin cities, they are simply arresting the idiots that are bent on disrupting, delaying, perpetrating violence, etc against the citizens of the twin cities. If they would like to peacfully protest each of their little problems, that would be fine but they always will take it a step or two further and try to get on the news. I don't agree with the city councils very often but they are doing us a favor this time.

In minneapolis, all governmental disputes are inter-marxist in nature.

If the activist leader is childish, has anger mangement problems, control issues, and is an attention-h.o., what does that say about the motley crew he leads?

Amen, Gar!
Go ahead and protest until you are weak and silly but you do not have the right to break any laws of the city. Any protester that injures a citizen of the city be it a police officer or regular person on the street or their property needs to go to jail! How they get handled is often their choice, if they become physical with the police officer is the officer suppose to just take it? It's okay to physically harm an officer?
haloka, get a life the subject was on the agenda to be dealt with so this protester just wanted to get his name in the paper and so he did.

The TV activists did get their 15 seconds of exposure. No doubt there will be a "go away money" lawsuit filed because on the the arresting officers may have looked at him in a hostile manner!

Consider it a timeout. Like when a bratty child has a tantrum in the grocery store because they don't get Kool-Aid.

The detainment, I would presume, was to stop the foot stomping and bantering that was disrupting the meeting. The bratty child was brought out of the meeting long enough to calm down and was later sent on her way. Ya gotta love it when the cops must waste their time babysitting so-called adults. Grow up Ms Ortiz!

Free Speech is not the same as "Freedom to not wait your turn and interupt an official meeting like a child interrupts a conversation". Get a clue.

good for the city council! it's not only protecting the police doing their job it protects the citizens of the city that are put in danger by protesters that could attempt or engage in illegal and violent actions that could potentially harm them or their property.

No, not Twin Cities residents, just those that choose to launch poop and pee gernades at them.

I could not be a cop. If I got hit with a poop and pee gernade, I would be beating hippies like that gorilla beat that suitcase in the old commercial.

'Free speech' is not the right to disrupt. He was disrupting their meeting. They had every right to demand that he stop, and throw him out when he refused.

Both city councils of Minneapolis and Saint Paul are utterly bereft of Republicans. It is your own brethren leftists who are suppressing you. What irony!!!

Of course, leftist suppression of dissent is nothing new.

"The Council also approved a protection for law-abiding persons — including journalists, camera people and legal observers — who are not engaged in a demonstration."

The bias is rather obvious. My query, is anyone involved in demonstrating deemed NON-law-abiding? Gee, better check the tax returns 'cuz all these years I thought I was paying the US Treasury, not China's. My point, not all demonstrators are bent on causing trouble, in fact, I would guess there to be just a few who are of the many who realize it's pointless simply but have a need to speak out... out of respect for our Constitution and love for the best ideals our country stands for and which have been squandered. So our voices will continue to have no weight, but they're the voices of people just like those of you who ridicule their concerns, and it's no claim to 15 seconds of fame, it's just an avenue to voice some very valid concerns.

The problem is, you are who your friends are. Do you think the cops will have time to sort out who is being peaceful and who is throwing glass bottles filled with human and animale waste at them?

You have been advised that there are anarchist groups that plan on "crashing the convention" and they do not have a peaceful gameplan. If you show up to protest, do so at your own risk. If you get caught up in the middle, the police do not have the luxury of calling a timeout to let all the peaceful protesters get out of Dodge.

I wouldn't be caught within 5 miles of the downtown area during the convention.
