However, I believe their are 2 things that the gov't could do that would help assist many with insurance problems. #1. Make ALL medical & Dental work tax deductible. Encourage the 'preventative' care and that will ultimately assist with medical care that is the result of neglect. #2. Make insurance companies more like credit unions. Serving the customer - not-for-profit OR a regulated capped profit. We have our Auto insurance through a company that works like that. They 'refund' customers money if they meet or exceed their claims goals. Now there is an idea, people get 'refunded' premiums if claims are reasonable. Current methods their is no incentive for insured people to NOT USE their insurance and EVERY reason for Insurance companies to try to deny claims or proceedures. It's not working. Like John Stossel says "If people bought insurance for groceries they'd buy all the food they could get." I can hear the Insurance Lobby screaming over those proposals already!

But I wonder if somewhere out there is somebody brave enough to start something like this without Gov't intervention. I mean, if my auto insurance company can do it, why can't any other kind of insurance do it? Truth is they can, but having the money, knowing the field and taking the risk are a huge wall to climb. I still favor competition over Gov't intervention. But the insurance companies aren't hurting enough to need to 'compete' more aggressively.

You might end up sick from the glue, or even worse get and infection under the teeth, and then your in trouble!!! You can die from that! I can pretty much guarantee that it will cost you a whole lot more if that happens!!! But hey, to each their own I guess...whatever floats yer boat!

You wouldn't want a piece of cyanoacrylate glue to get into your bloodstream either...that happening would be the same as a blood clot breaking loose.

Too Expensive wrote: I am amazed that a crown can cost 400 dollars How much dies it actually cost to make the corwn?? Dentistgs are billed 89-125 dollars. The rest of the cost is what the dentist charges for his/her time. Basically 300 of the 400 goes into the dentists pocket. Quite a mark up. Unfortunatley because dental costs are so high-many go without. Teeth that were filled as a child may need root canals later in life. When I couldn't afford to pay for a chipped tooth to get a crown-i brushed and brushed-the decay has travled to the tooth next door. So noe I doubled my problem. Dentists that take government student aid and low interestloans, should be required to do a ceratin amount of donated work. In this economy of the dentists want customers they will have to lower their prices so we can afford them. Where can you get a crown for $400? I have paid over twice that for each of my crowns. Am I getting ripped off?

Businessminded wrote: <quoted text> WHOA there. Now, I'm definitely on the side that our health care system has some problems. But, what you are using as an example isn't a problem of the health care industry. The problem for you isn't that it's too expensive in as much as the fact t hat YOU CANNOT AFFORD ANY sort of healthcare. We could cut the costs in 1/2 and you still couldn't afford it. The problem is that you don't make squat. Minimum wage jobs & 'slightly above' are not designed to support people. They're designed to be entry level jobs where you improve your skills and move up. Revamping the health care industry isn't going to help YOU and people like you unless it's 'welfare healthcare'. I know a family whose husband has suffered immensely due to an injury from Volunteering in the Fire Dept. Their family has struggled for several years to get him well enough to work in construction again. Because of Michigan's economy, he has taken jobs ALL over the US to support his family and pay his bills. This economy combined with his health have him unemployed again and they'll probably lose their home. Healthcare would help them, but it doesn't 'save' his job. Even if it were FREE, they'll lose their home. Why would it be okay for YOU to get free healthcare and the rest of us work like the family above to pay our own way? I would rather you get assistance in improving your job skills then health care. BUT, if you aren't motivated enough to change your situation why should the rest of us try to change it for you? These days, a lot of people feel lucky to have any job, even one that pays minimum wage. Where do you suggest all these people go to get high-paying jobs? The auto industry? I think you were unfair to criticize this person who is working and doing the best he/she can.

The auto industry? I think you were unfair to criticize this person who is working and doing the best he/she can. I am sorry that I gave the impression I was being critical. My point was simple - this person has a GREATER problem with the wage issue and 'bringing healthcare costs down' aren't going to help somebody who barily makes enough for housing & food. This person was complaining about expensive health care costs and how they can't afford it on 'just above min wage'. Heck, some can't afford it for their families making twice min wage. Affording health care is a problem. But we should not be irresponsible and make people believe that they are facing a far greater problem that needs significant attention. I don't know why this person is at that wage scale at an older age. Their are MANY scenarios for people in her shoes so I try not to pass judgement if it came off that way. I feel for them. If I waved a magic want and suddenly reduced healthcare by 50% this person STILL could not afford it. AND their would probably be more people in her shoes as the healthcare industry tightened it's 'belts'. Employability is a topic ALL by itself. IF you have the right skills in the right areas, I believe you can find work. Basic book-keeping is one example. Their is a shortage of GOOD affordable basic book-keeping skills for many small businesses. If I were unemployed right now I'd find a field I wanted to learn and work in. I'd learn everything I could, work for free if I had to UNTIL I earned the right to charge a fee for all that I learned. It's the old fashioned 'work hard' theme that too many aren't willing to do. I'm not directing this at this person. I'm simply pointing out that our ancestors worked their hind ends off and didn't expect things to be given to them like our generation does. Very few would consider 'working for free'.

And just how the hell are they supposed to feed their family & put a roof over their kids head while working for free like you propose? Take the damn silver spoon out of your mouth and think before you write! You are completely clueless and unrealistic!!

I onced knew a 93 year-old who kept her false teeth in with super glue and she was in better health than most 23 year-olds. BTW, by accident I dropped some super glue on a wart on my finger...It took the wart off. When I told my Dermatologist, he said, "you discovered one of our secrets."

How would she keep false teeth in with super glue? The mouth is wet so how does that work? I can understand the wart coming off but holding the teeth in?

Joann, I'm in SE Ky where we probably have some seriously low crown fees and our crowns run around $775 so, no, you're not getting ripped off! I don't know anywhere where you can get a crown for $400 unless it's a stainless steel one like we use in pediatric dentistry! We typically don't use those on adult teeth! Interesting discussion here folks!

She said they take care of their kids first, like ALL parents SHOULD, instead of getting nails and crap done for yourself. You people don't mind feeling *sorry* for the octo(scumbag)mom that is living off the system.*Minorities* always CLAIM they can't afford anything but seem to have money for their teeth, hair, nails, clothes, cars and 8 or more kids and you cater to THAT, but THAT'S ok. Such hypocrits! Wow Michele thanks so much for your support! THere will always be people out there who do NOT know the whole story and will judge....granted most was my fault I drank a ton of Dr Pepper, but for those of you out there who know nothing I did brush every day even when I was in pain....but I have THREE children who comes first. Dental work is NOT cheap and taking care of them is #1!!!! I am lucky however as I had my teeth fixed but it dosn't mean that I have not had to change myself or my habits as I have had to change my whole life style. Again Michele Thank you again for your support, people who have noone but themselves to take care of or people who just like to judge don't get it. Wow Thanks to all of you who are supporting me,It is NOT easy living in the REAL world. THose with a SILVERSPOON in their mouth have NO clue how to live in our world let alone SURVIVE it. THey would cry and whine about how they couldn't have this or that. But for those of us who have to live in the real world we all know how hard it can be,and even when things get bad we are still here. I have my smile fixed now which is great I do not hurt and I can eat most things, not all but most....But important thing here I am no longer in any pain and I am no longer ashamed or worried about how people will judge me,not from WHO I am but how I look. Our society has gotton so off track it isn't about appearances it is about the person, who they are,how they are, just *sigh* the person in themselves.NEVER judge a book by their cover!!!! THanks again all for the support and for those of you who seem to have everything and feel like you do no wrong and feel like you are so perfect to judge, your time will come and you will NOT bring me or anyone else down just because you need something to do or to feel better about the pathetic selves you are....you are IGNORANT!
