Charter fishing industry in trouble
I’ve been reading a lot of recent articles about how badly the BP oil spill has hurt the seafood business and I can certainly sympathize with those fisherman and their families . I would like to let people know that the local charter fishing industry has been devastated by the spill and the perception it has created . I have been a charter fishing guide for the past 16 years in Terrebonne parish and I’m sad to say I can no longer make a living at the job I have loved . This past summer was the worst any of the captains can remember as far as the number of customers booking fishing trips, not because the fishing was bad but the belief that the gulf is poisoned and the fish is toxic to eat. The way BP and the Gulf Coast Claims Facility has treated charter boat fishermen is disgraceful and underhanded . They have done nothing but stall on claims and try to low ball when they actually get around to making an offer. They know the longer they can drag the process out the more desperate our financial situation will become and we will be more likely to accept a low offer.
Most Captains are so disgusted by these dirty tactics that we feel we have no choice but to seek legal help because there is no chance to get fair compensation otherwise.
Louisiana’s charter fishermen are a small group and I guess that’s why BP and the GCCF has tried to deal with us so unfairly but we are an important part of the tourism draw of this state. I hope that our elected officials will support us in this time of need and pressure these billionaires to do what’s right. I also hope the people of Louisiana urge them to do so and keep us in your prayers.
