Just because one very bad thing happens to one bridge doesn't mean it'll happen here. it's always possible, but the grand island bridges were just painted over the past couple of years, don't you think they would inspect them as they go? I totally understand the fear, i worry about the same thing when i go over any bridge. lets just not blow this completely out of proportion.

"the bridges are rated just under 4" on a scale of 1 through 7. With all the money that is being spent to cross those bridges, I'm wondering what happened to all the funds to keep those bridges at 7. Well, another fine mess we got ourselves in....

I am certain that the Grand Island mountain lion opts to swim the river, rather than cross those dangerous bridges and get ripped off .75 for a toll.

NO,NO!!! PLEASE build another bridge to Canada. One that has monitoring with the fiberoptics like the Danish bridges. One that would benefit all of us. We need all of our bridges equipped with fiberoptics and all can be monitored at a central location via computers. It time to really put technogoly to work for us. The day of useing the hammer inspecting a bridge is over. This can be done if we all stick together. Wouldn't be great if New York State and the Federal government listened and reacted to what the citizens want? We are the richest country in the world and what do we use our tax dollars on. War. It really is time to get down to business and get our country back on line. Maybe starting with the bridges. I know I sound like a dreamer and out of touch with reality but then again I do have this dream....

Wait a minute... "similar design"?

Similar as in what, they're both bridges?

Minnesota bridge: flat, no metal supports over the road deck, 2 lanes each way.

Grand Island bridge: Big hill, massive arch support over the road deck, 1 lane each way.

I know the staple of WNY news is to somehow tie something in WNY to a national story, but this is quite a stretch.

I do have to give the local news channels some credit. I have yet to see a story about some WNYer who knew a guy who 10 years ago drove past the bridge that collapsed in Minnesota. With every other story they usually drag some idiot out with the most tenuous link possible to the national story.

If you want to see if the bridges are substantial enough to "hold up" get a platoon of Army men walking shoulder to shoulder in cadence across the bridge.By the time the first row gets to the center of the bridge it will start moving in conjunction with those men walking in step! By the time the last row gets to the center of the bridge it will be moving up and down enough to break. Which is why service men do not walk in cadence over a bridge. If it does not break, I'll be the first to drive over it.
