Leave the Grand Island tolls alone - they are only 75 cents and only 9 cents for residents. Instead fight to get the $3.00 tolls on the Peace Bridge removed!!!!!

Let's keep the tolls and use the money for mandatory spelling classes in our school systems.

$.09 per trip for Grand Island residents is the current fee. The fact is when the original 2 bridges were built (One at each end of the Island) the tolls were only going to be charged until the bridges were paid for. The addition of a second bridge at each end in the 1960's served as an excuse to keep the tolls until they were paid for; even though enough money had already been collect from the first set to pay for the second set. It doesn't matter where you live, you should not have to pay to go home! If they can set the Island resident fee at $.09 on the e-z pass, there is no reason they can not set it at "ZERO" so we don't have to pay to get home. They can still collect tolls from "USERS" that are not residents.(I've been paying since 1968)

Below is a letter to the editor of the Isledegrande website I sent last fall. My comments still hold true.

Fighting Bridge Tolls - Be Careful What You Wish For!- 2006
To the editor:
Rus Thompson is pushing to have the tolls removed from the Grand Island bridges. I believe that this is the wrong thing to do.
Mr. Thompson says we have three alternatives:
1- Build another bridge to Grand Island New York.
2- Expand or widen the bridges.
3- Remove the tolls to allow the free flow of traffic.
There is a fourth: raise the tolls for non-Islanders!
Mr. Thompson, as well as many others, seems to forget that people will modify their behavior to the reduced tolls. Simply put, there will be substantially more traffic over the bridges, including more truck traffic, with the preponderance being non-Islanders "cutting through."
Just look what happened on the 190 when the tolls were removed. The commute is a good ten minutes longer, with much more stop-and-go traffic, as more people have started driving to work. So, we have saved $.75 in tolls at the expense of ten minutes, thus valuing our time at $4.50/hour. Our gas consumption has increased due to the stop and go nature of the traffic. Since there hasn’t been an influx of people to WNY on account of the elimination of the tolls, the additional drivers must be former bus riders. We can look to having to pay more property taxes to underwrite the increased NFTA losses. If enough people drive, we can expect to see higher parking fees downtown. The roadbed will also deteriorate faster. Yeah, removing those tolls was a great idea!
On Grand Island the situation is even more complicated: the tolls are the best police protection we will ever be able to afford. If an Islander crosses the bridge once a day every day of the year it costs under $35, or less than $3/month. It is not that expensive.
We should demand that the tolls be increased for non-Islanders with the requirement that the funds so collected be used to complete the LaSalle Expressway around to connect with the Colvin extension or the 990. Not only would this eliminate unnecessary traffic from the Island, but would assist the Tonawandas in regaining the competitive positions they lost when the expressways ignored them.
Don’t believe that saving $3/month in tolls is a good thing. It isn’t. It will be a disaster for our lifestyle.
Sincerely,
Jim Mulcahy

I just recently moved to Grand Island and I like people having to pay a 'cover charge' to get into my town. I have no problem paying the 9 cents each time I enter the island. Traffic and Crime will increase if the tolls come down. These public officials need to work on something more important to society than removing tolls. They all just want credit on taking the tolls down.

No, keep the tolls to clean up the schools in Grand Island. I went to Grand Island for the first time in May. I stopped by a Elementary school, while waiting for Fantasy Island to open up, with my children while they played on the playground and all I saw as dog shit everywhere. Along with garbage all over. Doesn't anyone over there know how to clean up after themselves or their pets?

Cleaning up after pets is a whole separate subject. When the neighbors dog took a dump on my property, I just scooped it up with a shovel and threw it at their front door. They got the message. The dog wasn't allowed loose after that either. As for the litter in the playground areas, its just another case of parents not teaching their kids to repect things.

I like your reaction to the poop, I will keep that in mind for the people that walk their dogs in front of my river road home. I also agree with parents teaching kids to pick up. My daughter would never let me even think of leaving garbage on the ground (and she's 4!!). I would like to know which playground they were at because the playground around my corner is as clean as can be.

Most people paying the 75 cents are just passing through, and not actually stopping in your town. I doubt that the 75 cent fee is detering crime from GI If you truely believe that, then Niagara Falls should start charging a dollar. I do agree with your comment on public officials doing something more meanignful. This is just grand standing at its finest.

Bridge traffic and shady elements would increase with a toll removal. That is common sense.

Most of the crime is NF is by the residents that live there.
