The excel sheet that the social security number were on wasn't encrypted nor was it on a secure server.

The file was in fact in a random series of folders. So all you had to do is double click on folders randomly to find the file.

SO NO this was not hacking. The computer security at that school during that time was a complete joke. Their IT security person was someone who just knew how to hook up computers. You could use the command console (cmd.exe), use proxy for the internet and you could erase your own log of what you were doing on the computer.

If anything the student was a white/grey hat hacker, he probably didn't' even know what he/she found. Clicking on random folders or using a search function does not make you a hacker.

Yes the student should have not been looking around but guess what, we are in the digital age! people are always going to be snooping around. Secure your important data, encrypt and put it somewhere safe. Why should we feel bad about the school when they didn't even lock their front door?

supposedly experts were called in from NYC...wut? If there was identity theft going on, shouldn't the FBI be involved?

So let's educate you, douchebag. Hacking is the process of exploiting vulnerabilities to gain unauthorized access to resources. The vulnerability is stupidity on the part of the system owner and it works just like social engineering; you can go look that one up to use in your next profound enlightenment of the general public.
