Is there a mountain lion on the loose in Grand Island? In the past month there have been three sightings in a woodded area on Baseline and Bush roads of what could be a mountain lion.

I live have land in Yorkhire, in Catt county, about 10 minutes from Springville. Last night I saw a mountain lion in the woods. It was 15 feet in front of myself and my son. We were on 4 wheelers and the cat didn't look scared of us at all. It was large, 4 ft long with a long curved tail. It probably weighed 100 lbs. It was absolutely without a doubt a mountain lion. The neighbors in our immediate area have seen this same cat recently too. I called the DEC and was basically told that they weren't going to wonder aimlessly through the woods and to call back when I saw it again. I mentioned a fresh deer kill our neighbor had seen and the DEC seemed vaguely interested in that, but still didn't offer to come investigate. I am terrified to go back out there. Has anyone else seen this mountain lion out there?

If there is a mountain lion out there, you only need to be fearful if he is starving. Sounds like there are plenty of deer and other wildlife a mountain lion can feed on, so it wouldn't be interested in you.
It is common for people to panic when they see wildlife they aren't used to seeing and get a bad rap about attacking people. Attacks by bears or mountain lions are rare but HIGHLY PUBLICIZED when they occur. We should probably be more afraid of a strange dog, since dog attacks are so rampant.
These animals don't really want anything to do with humans - they are just trying to survive on this planet like we are.
I went to minnesota three years ago and lived for four days with a bear biologist and some other people. I interacted with wild bears, so did the others who were there. We were nervous at first, but learned that the bears are so much more afraid of us than we are of them.. Check out the website - it is very interesting www.lynnrogers.com it will lead you to the bear study program info.

Sorry, wrong website. It's simply lynnrogers ( not.com ) also, north american bear center or wildlife research institure. typing in lynnrogers will lead you to the other two. Truly a wealth of information.
