An article about a proofreading error wasn't proofread. Shouldn't the word "ballot" be "ballots" the first time it appeared in paragraph 2?

Yes, all of the absentee ballots have to be reprinted, not just the ones that had already been mailed. Also, the expense must include the postage to mail them, as well as the time it takes to write the letter of explanation that goes with each new ballot.

Did anyone notice (in the article) that additional, unprinted ballots went out in PDF format? How much time, effort and expense went into correcting those?

People rely on Spell Check too much.

"Ballot" was not flagged, when the plural was needed because it is a viable word. Proofreading is an art. You not only need a superb knowledge of the language, you need to be awake and totally alert and be able to understand what you are reeding. ;-)

Well, the county clerk is a Republican.

It's all part of the election strategy to steal votes. Look for tea party members to be threatening and intimidating. Rick Snyder will take the state and turn it into a totalitarian regime.

Sounds silly, doesn't it?

So,'goose, what's your excuse for "reeding"? Asleep, unalert or could not understand what you were reading?:-)
(You showed your superb knowledge of the language in your use of the word "is", so that can't be the reason.)
Come on SR. I put a winky eye, smiley face at the end of the sentence to signify sarcasm. My point was supposed to be this: If you type "reeding", it will not be flagged as an error, because it too, is a word.

I have seen countless errors in written print of morons using the word "then" instead of "than". The proper use of "then" and "than" is taught in 4th or 5th grade for God's sake and some journalism majors don't know which one to use.

The English language is being bastardized by every uneducated imbecile who opens their mouth. Lazy speech patterns that are used in ebonics, are entrenching themselves deeper and deeper, and some educated people are embracing them. Just axe me. But I guess that is better then speaking Mexican. ;-)
