Of course people who have a gun and want to shoot a cop always charge first and then shoot! IF he wanted to shoot a cop he would have shot him right away and also if he had a gun most likely he would have shot his x instead of stabbing her.. We need to video tape all raids, then we would know exactly what happened all the time, you know, the truth???!!! God knows what happened, thats all i have to say..

Maybe we should drug test all cops right after something like this happens, TO see if they are high or drunk... I mess up at work i get drug tested and i work in a factory!

Crazy scenario and situation. Many people can't or won't do what these courageous officers did on that particular night. Sorry for the loss of Olbert but thankfully he didn't accomplish his goal by taking more lives. May the officers involved continue to serve and protect although this is sure to leave an emotional scar. Thanks for everything you do to keep us safe!

Here we go. Oh he was unarmed, why did the cops have to shoot him? Maybe it's because they couldn't see his hands and he made an aggressive move. He had just tried to turn his ex into sliced turkey you know. This is clearly more cut and dry than the GVSU incident.

Well Hank, there is a reason why you work in a factory, and you've shown that reason to everyone who might read your rediculous posting.

It's unfortunate that this deputy was forced to make a decision to kill this man, but his hand was forced. His life was changed forever - let's remember that he acted on the information and circumstances that he had available at that precise moment in time. His actions have been reviewed, and a decision has been made as to the outcome of the entire situation with regard to finite details of the incident. May God bless the man who made decisions which led to his death, as well as the public servant who was forced to take lethal action. Nobody wins when this happens.

The suspects weapon of choice of the night was a knife. He had just sunk one in his wifes chest, 1cm away from her heart. Imagine going into a house on fire for the sole reason their daughter was unaccounted for and finding the suspect in a house with no lights, on fire with smoke and the man charges your partner. Police may shoot a person whom has a knife or believes they have a knife within 21 feet.

These deputies put themselves in harms way entering a house on fire looking for a girl whom they believed could be in danger. They did the opposite of common sense by entering that house. The man charged a column of armed officers flailing his arms.

He decided suicide by cop was better than burning to death.

These officers are brave individuals. I hope they are doing well.

Two things... first even video is not the end all. How clear do you think the images would be if take during that search? No lights on, only flashlights, no ambient light from outside... smoke filling the house... not very clear. Video is good in some situations, but would be absolutely useless in this one, not to mention putting one more person in harms way for no reason.

I am glad all the officers are ok, but a stabbing murder suspect is coming at you in the dark and you re-holster? Good time to be shooting to eliminate the threat. Not trying to second guess, just seems odd.

Great work by a group of brave deputies. Glad you all went home safely.

I bet he was just turning his life around too right? He is dead because of his choices. He is to blame, nobody else.

Couldn't see his hands...Lets see...how about using the police issued flash lights!!! Crazy as it may-be but the man was unarmed. Yes, he was not stable but if all unstable people are killed due to what they have done, half of Western Michigan would be died.

I pray the GVSU incident is not the same verdict.

Did you not read the full prosecutor's report?

What part of "possible fleeing murder suspect" do you all not understand?

There was blood smeared all over the house, which could have possibly belonged to William Olbert's daughter. There were multiple fires and an intentional natural gas leak in the house. Did you see what happened to four Oakland, California officers this weekend? In broad daylight?

What if they saw -- from the top of the stairs -- Mr. Olbert holding a knife or gun to his daughter in the basement or on the far side of some bedroom? What if Olbert was pointing a gun at the officers in the dark as soon as they kicked in the door, with their primary light source being flashlights?

A taser and pepper spray are not the weapons of choice in this situation.

The suspect is acting in a threatening manner...ok, let's all pull out our flashlights in the middle of leaking gas and fire to take the time to question this guy further.....??? Let's just be a little realistic here!!!

As to the GVSU verdict, the whole story has certainly not been told. There is more to this story than we all realize. Search warrants are not issued for "little guys" involved in drugs. But, I am sure, he is just another "nice young boy."

You know they shot him just for fun right? Cops should have to be shot or stabbed at least once before they kill somebody because the first cut or shot might have been an accident, right? these Deputies did what most of the people in this world cannot do or want to do. Thank god for the police officers who take time to put in that nasty disrespected uniform and answer your calls for help because you can't handle it yourself's.

The house is burning there is smoke everywhere . Try shining a flashlight into smoke genius. Now do it while an individual who just stabbed his wife is running at you with a stabbing motion. You have one or two seconds to act. Do you try giving him a hug or do you defend yourself?

An attempted murderer is running toward your friend and colleague in a dark, smoke-filled, burning house. He's making swinging motions with his arms. In no more than a second, there could be a knife shoved and slicing though your friend's chest and heart or into his face, skull, and brain, or into his throat. Do you really want to spend time using a flashlight to try to catch a glimpse of his moving hands to see if there is a shiny sharp object in his fist(s)? Especially if his body may be partially obstructing your view of those hands?

That's a very unintelligent thing to say and you know it.
