You State "Of 21 banks in the Midwest, TCF, U.S. Bank and Wells Fargo ranked 20th, 19th and 17th, respectively, in the 2008 rankings." But then further down in the Story you list US Bank 17th and Wells Fargo 19th. If Wells Fargo ranked 17th vs 19th as stated then they actually moved up 2 spots from last year.

The banks have been reporting record profits and bragging about how these are from fees. The continually come up with new fees and jack up the old fees. It costs them pennies to return a check for insufficient funds but they charge you $20 or more. They purposely cash the biggest check first so they can bounce more of the smaller ones. The banks are as crooked as the credit card companies. No excuse for not watching your balance and spending what you don't have but the banks waits for you to be down and then come in and start kicking. Is it any surprise people don't like the banks? The credit unions are better but they too can charge some ridiculously high fees.

Anyone that thinks a bank is your friend and is there to help them out is a FOOL. These scumbags will drop you like a hot potato the minute they think you may really need the money. These people are really only interested in lending money to people with the highest credit scores and even then practically want to take away your kichen table if they think they may not get their money back. They need the earnings to overpay their company officers.

Disclaimer - I work at a bank - although I'm not a banker. It kills me when I hear people complaining that banks don't loan money to those that need it most and then others (or maybe the same people) say - why did the bank loan me money when they knew I wouldn't be able to pay it back. Now they want to foreclose on my house. Then banks are the bad guys. Aren't banks taking $ billions and $ billions of write offs due to bad debts?

"Many retail banks are experiencing a decline in their brand image, especially in the current economic climate, where many consumers hold banks responsible for the current housing and mortgage crisis," said Rockwell Clancy, executive director of financial services at J.D. Power and Associates."

So in other words, the real reason is that people are stupid.

The problem isn't so much stupidity as greed, on the part of both sides of the transaction!
