Great just what we need, more turmoil. I have spent many yrs working for Pier 1. I am so tired of mistep after mistep. My customers are tired of being harrassed when they come in to shop.
If I hear will this be going on sale anytime soon, or when are the coupons coming out one more time, I fear I will explode.
Now we will be spending millions to defend Alex Smith. I ask who is in control of this ship?
I beg the powers that be, to please listen to the people on store level and stop the maddness.

That is exactly what I was thinking.Cant we get anything right?How much in legal fees is this going to cost?Even worse how much confidence will shareholders have in these decisions.Plus who is this retail genius anyway that we have to fight for?Will he lead us to the promised land of job security?
Did you see the insane promotions coming up?Buy 1 get 1 at 50% and fill your shopping bag?Oh joy!!!Cant wait to have some cheap old bag wanting to get me fired cause I wont give her 100 dollars in merch for ten bucks.True story I had a lady who wanted three chairs that were already 50% off for more of a discount and was actually upset when I refused.GOOD GOD!!!
Not to mention the crap I am getting from our regionals.What planet do they live on?Have they heard of the law of diminishing returns?
Heaven forbid we say something of the sorts to anyone and we will be labeled negative traitors and will be accused of having bad attitudes.Its funny when you mention a problem we are told to be more positive and basically blown off but six months down the line when they finally figure out there is a problem,they act like our saviors.So much for honest feedback.I will have to send a joker style letter to all my bosses with this forum address so they can get an idea of how their emplyees really feel.

They would chalk it up to defeatism.They have a problem with reality.They think we add water and everything happens in minutes.If you are going to pass the word be stealthy.

I love that in the press release P1 claims that we sell only regular priced merchandise HA HA when was the last itme our customers were even given a chance to believe that the merchandise would ever be regular priced??? pick one item get 20% off, yah right, unless your customer pressures u to ring each individually because they dont want to pay regular price. but wait, another sale starts next week, oh, and then another one the week after that.....regular price ha ha!!!!!!

Not to mention the stress that the company is putting on its store managers and in turn, the store teams. How many hours have they cut now at store level?
We keep hearing "payroll is the biggest controllable expense"...they are going to realize too late that all of this cutting will come at a cost. Managers are over worked, over stressed....and they keep adding things to the pile...cutting away resources to get things done...and never taking anything off the plate. Companies that do this never hang on to their good people.

Yes, we were 'asked' to view it this weekend. Just a little dry wouldn't you say??? I really wish they hadn't let him get up there on his own, he seemed so unprepared. Anyone having any luck with BOGO?? Wasn't that the catch phrase Payless shoe store used? I just want the company to do well. I work for and with so many wonderful people, and want it to continue.....wishful thinking??

I must gibe them credit for trying new things but we are taking a huge bath in gross profit.I do believe we can and will turn it around but at what cost?Cutting more payroll,losing more great tenured associates,driving the store managers to drink?At the this point I feel the weight of the companys success or failure on my shoulders.
That cant be too healthy.

I know that feeling all too well.(The weight of the company's success or failure on my shoulders)It is mixed with what the previous person said about working for and with such wonderful people...people who are trying to make the best of this situation. I work for people who have no other option but to paint the most optimistic picture possible. The celebration of the "year being behind us" is just getting a little old. I would love to think that changes are possible...but I am unsure I can take any additional stress while these changes are happening.

On behalf of SMs everywhere "Im sorry"for these damn flex shifts.I know you guys arent firemen but for some reason we want you on call two or three nights a week.It makes even less sense when you read the attendance policy.What good is a flex shift when you call me an hour before someone who does not care for their job calls in sick twenty minutes before their shift.I have lost very good employees because we only schedule them for two five hor shits and two flex shifts.Its absurd!!Furthermore my boss demands full availability from every associate.Its been a nightmare to say the least.There is no way we can retain good associates with this horrible business practice.I feel for you.

I am a former SM for P1 of almost 5 yrs and I must say that P1 is the most horribly run company I have ever worked for. It's pathetic to think upper mngt. thinks we could drive sales by harrasing customers...asking for phone #'s, email, address etc. every visit is absurd..what's next a blood sample!?! And how are you supposed to drive sales by not only selling, doing stock, VM, setting a new sale everytime you blink your eye, unload truck, and oh yea only w/3 people! I'd like to see 3 upper mngt. try it just for one day---they'd be singing a different tune so fast it wouldn't even be funny. And if they want to control payroll how bout firing all the buyers who make stupid stupid decisions to buy ridiculous quantities of ugly poor quality merchandise. Bet that's a nice chunk of change there. Having to pack stockrooms full to the ceiling of merchandise that will never ever sell in ANY store is not the solution!!! Leaving a company like this was the best decision I ever made. I do not regret it one bit. Yes it is sad to leave your store staff but there really is more to life then P1.

Unfortunately, most retailers are operating their stores like this now. What most of them don't realize is that with no people to service the customers, there will be no customers to service. There's always some competitive company willing to spend some extra bucks to bring the customers in. Now, just what company that IS; is the REAL question.

wow, what a great way to learn about your own company. i spend 40 hours a week there at the store and learn more about whats happening through this blog! layoffs cut backs on insurance and vacation??? huh?? when are we informed about this, or is this US stores only?? anyone have any info out there, obviously i'm not getting it from my employer. work for me is still a blast, we make it a good time, but now i think i must be living in a dream land

You might be.You need to start by looking at the stock for the past year.This all started about four years ago but the actions taken were not appropriate.As far as Canada stores I dont know much about.I dont even know if we work under the same systems.Look at the UK stores though.They were sold over four months ago for cash to keep us afloat.You cant rely on your regionals to give you reliable info because they are company men who dont want to start a mass exodus but in the long run they are kept in the dark.You need to google pier 1 and study the trends.

Thanks JMC, I will def. be keeping my eyes open and my ears. hopefully some canadian manager will put some info out there for us. scary times indeed. sorry to read about all the pain in everyones regions it is just such a waste. i'm thinking that my best bet is to get my resume out there. i do understand that regionals cant spill the beans, they need to protect there jobs as much as everyone else. i will start to do some homework myself on this company, i feel like i am waking up from a dream. does anyone know of anyother blogs or reliable news sources other than this one?

Hey guys I worked for this company for an awful long time. I still have many friends within the organization. I understand where your coming from, I check out this sight because I still own stock in the company. I think you all need to give the new guy a chance. He did not create this situation, he is just trying to fix it. Unfortunately along the way he will need to make tough decisions, that are not personal but business. Pier 1 as a brand is still a major player in the industry. What does concern me is that the postings in here are so negative. This forum is open to everyone, if you continue to post in this manner, the public will think the company is on its last leg and stop shopping with you. Which is not the case. Remember you reap what you sow.
