There is no way a ferret, with the size of their mouths, bit off 7 fingers before the parents heard the baby screaming. No way. The story doesn't make sense. They just don't have that kind of temperment to do something like that. And from what I read the ferret was only 6 months old which means it was small. It's more likely that a dog did it or the parents did it and are scapegoating the poor ferret. There's no way they "slept" through 7 fingers being eaten by a tiny ferret mouth. That would have been like an hour of screaming even if it was possible. And the baby could have been moving it's arms around in pain and there no way a ferret would have been able get at the fingers. Poor ferret & baby, both the victims of abusive or drugged out adults!

I am personally going to start a crusade to have that child removed from his parents home..They don't deserve to have such a gift as that child ..I'd like to know how ANYONE can sleep through a baby crying, especially what that baby must have sounded like. Those parents deserve hard core prison time and permanent loss of custody of that baby!!!! The selfishness and stupidity of those parents caused the rest of that baby's life to be mapped out for him..Where's the damn fairness?

Personally, I think there is more to this than meets the eye. Like, child abuse, maybe? You're right. Nobody could sleep thru what must have been ear piercing screams from the baby. I don't think the ferret was the sole culprit here. But, since I was not there, only the parents and God, know what happened. May God help the child and have mercy on the parents. I don't think I could.

I love ferrets, but they are not an animal I would EVER have running loose in a house with my son unattended. Ferrets can be sweet as sugar, but they can get mean and be unpredictable at times. I was a ferret owner for 2 years and my husband has owned them most of his life and he also agrees. I saw a plastic surgery show about a year ago of a young woman with severe facial disfigurements...when she was a baby, she was sleeping one night and the family ferret was lose and got into her crib, smelled milk on her mouth and area around it and just ate her face to hell, it was so sad. Ferrets are great companions, but only by responsible owners. The baby from Grain Valley should be investigated for child abuse, how could a ferret do that much damage before the parents stepped in? If you own a ferret, who is a natural hunter...HAVE SOME COMMON SENSE AND KEEP THEM AWAY FROM BABIES. CAGE THEM WHEN YOU AREN'T WATCHING THEM!! The parents are absolute morons

There needs to be a five day waiting period on ferrets.
Or perhaps, only the police should be able to own ferrets.
We need new laws...lots and lots of new laws.
Pass a law to make it illegal for ferrets to eat fingers...that's a start.

Read your last sentence, and tell me how the heck you plan on outlawing ferrets eating fingers. How do you outlaw something an animal does? Owners need to be responsible. Ferrets only owned by cops? Are you high? Why do the police make better pet owners? Its the person not their profession that matters. There idiot cops out there, just like the idiot parents in Grain Valley. By your confusing comment about ferret owners, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that YOU have never owned a ferret before. And lack common sense. When you outlaw finger biting, then what, put the ferret down? They already do that....

WHAT!!! First of all, that poor baby. That is pure torture!! Second of all, when I fiirst heard the story I thought they said parrot. Now that I see they said ferret it just doesn't make sense. Did it have rabies? Was it starving? I have many friends with ferrets and though they may get nippy at times, to sit there and naw at 7 baby fingers seems unrealistic. And really the baby wasn't screaming?! I don't know what's worse these disgusting people or Casey Anthony.

Uh, You are joking, right? Any idea how many more babies have been mauled by family dogs than by pet ferrets? The personality of ANY pet is a direct result of interactions with human caretakers. It's been my experience that individuals with such extreme views as yours are those most likely to shine the responsibility of pet ownership and just blame the animal for the consequences of a human caretakers' ignorance.
