I recently ran across reports of "monster sightings" in the Grafton area, back in June of 1965. Robert Cockrell apparently wrote two articles for the Sentinel about the sightings, one of which was his own.
The "monster" was described as being between seven and nine feet tall with white or light gray skin, "slick like a seal's". There were several sightings, but not much publicity and the events have been all but completely forgotten.
Now, since it's roughly 50 years since those sightings, and given the popularity, and tourist/commercial value that has been given to other better known WV "monsters" (like the Flatwoods "Green Monster" and Pt. Pleasant's "Mothman", it seems like a not altogether awful thing to try to preserve and record whatever information can still be gleened about Grafton's weirdest visitor.
So, anybody remember hearing about the Grafton Monster? Any relative, friends, or neighbors who saw it? Any actual witnesses out there?
If so, let's hear about it!

Maybe before opening your "idiot" mouth you need to read. No one said that the monster is real/true. They simply said that it is true the tv show is on & showing an episode about the so called grafton monster.

Thanx, someone actually showed it to me today. Im happy.

Realist- I meant that i hoped it was true about it being on the show. I dont care if the sightings are real. I believe a lot of the show is staged, but i do enjoy watching it.

My grandfather told me about this creature one time when I was young. I would like to have asked him more about it, but he's long gone. The name he called it was the "Face Basilisk." I remember him telling me a story of the guy he often bought cattle from. The guy lived in the Knottsville area, I believe near what some call Blue Deep. I don't remember what animal(s) were involved, but some of them had apparently been abducted and taken into the forest. Not a whole group at once, but one animal each time over a span of roughly 3 months. The guy and my grandfather had searched for each animal after it had vanished, but it left no trace. The missing animal would be heard moaning or yelping in distress in the early mornings and when you followed the noise and came upon the animal, it was dead. The cause was undetermined, but my grandfather claimed that each animal's face had been disfigured.(This is the first part of the name, FACE) I don't believe my grandpa or his friend ever saw the thing first-hand, but the people around Grafton claimed the creature had a seal's skin/hide. I don't recall it being 'headless,' though. Everything else that people are saying today seems to be fairly close to the description I heard long ago, though.

... The second part of the name, BASILISK, is a lizard/water creature I do believe. Seal skin or lizard skin -- it's hard to tell what it really is. So, there you have it. That is the story of what I know as the FACE BASILISK. Hope this helps anyone looking to research information.

I grew up in Grafton WV as did my whole family and none of us has ever heard of this. I was born in 1965 so obviously I don't remember anything about the news reports of it but my parents don't remember this either. I wish I could get copies of the supposed news stories. Since I no longer live in WV I can't go to a local library and pull up old microfiche of the newspapers.
