The fire crews were there, within minutes but the house was already fully involved. The home owner said they didn't wake-up until the fire was coming through the floor from downstairs. They had smoke detectors but no batteries in them. Spencer Fire Department worked hard at knocking down the fire, with the help of Trufant Fire Department. Oakfield Fire Department helped with bringing in water. They were insured. The cause is still being investigated.

bet some people never think to check the batteries assuming a fire will never happen in their home. such an inexpensive way to help save a life. and no insurance... i understand all the cuts we make to make ends meet, but insurance should never be cut out. ya never know when you will need it. has there been any thing set up to help with clothing for the family? or is anyplace taking cash donations? i bet they will appreciate anything especially this time of the year.

I am continually amazed by the people I run into in my line of work that dig in their heels when I suggest they have me install smoke detectors up to code or anywhere closer to code than the one or none they have currently. The standard response is "but the house hasn't burned down yet."
