depends
#2 Apr 22, 2011
well i guess that would depend on who the kid is.....some parents cant afford to send their child or just plain dont do anything for their children. the parent group decides which kids get picked not mr dixon. i heard they were paying for two. i can say that i am thankful that i was able to afford(barely) to beable to send my child

This for one could make me very irate. First of all, the parent group chose? They couldnt even be bothered to show up at the meeting to support graduation being outside when it was told to us that everyone was in support of it, its why we pushed because we knew it is what the majority wanted.

This is not right. My child had a friend who's mom is on disability and just couldnt afford to come up with 800 (which I think is ridiculous) for the trip and is to proud to ask for help. No Spring break, no senior trip. Felt really bad for the kid. I'd also like to point out that I have friends from Edwards Knox and Hermon Dekalb who's senior trips are significantly less than ours and by that I mean in some cases, nothing. It didnt depend on the kids selling abilities either. Its just from day one they saved they money for this, the senior trip was their goal and all money went to that. What I dont understand is my child has done nothing to spend any sort of money since 7nth grade that would take a great portion of that money exept prom, so where did it go? I know everyone will tell me to go to the parent meetings and I'd love to, would someone like to tell me when they are, because being the parent of a senior they seem to be very well kept under wraps.

I'll be curious to see who the 2 kids are ,I hope they really do deserve it .Your right alot of people just dont do anything for their kids and then their are some that just need help sorting out their priorities and are always willing to accept a hand out .Why pay when you can get it for free !!!

If not everyone can afford it why don't they do something that everyone CAN afford? It's always been this way that "certain" high dollars make the choices! I find it uphauling! Every senior should be able to go...isn't that the way that we raise our children? If your child wants a piece of candy they don't bring it somewhere unless there is enough for EVERYBODY!? Why do they need to go on such an expensive trip anyway? Do they not realize that we are in terrible economic times where people are barely able to feed their children and heat their houses?? I am dissappointede by this. Gouverneur High School should be ashamed of themselves...

First, no one is entitled to go. If you want to truly go you would have found a way. The kids knew 4 yrs ago they would be seniors and have a chance to do the senior trip. Its not like it just sprang up overnite.

Second, don't give me this crap about a parent not being able to help. I bet the parents that are crying poverty smoke, or drink, or party, or watch cable TV, or have other unnecessary things.

Third, don't even pull that BS about the candy analagy. CRAP, if I want a piece of candy, and you want one, you van damn sure buy your own.

i honestly think that if a child is going for free than mr.dixon had a good reason to choose the child and knew there financial situation. yes some parents are going to be mad that did pay in full. but just because tha family couldnt afford doesnt mean that a child should be deprived of a good time and the memories they will make on the trip.and there was fund raisers and parents could sign up to help at sporting events to earn money so its not like all parents had to pay in full for the trip. if you guys are parents then honestly act like an adult a dont worry about other peoples situations.

Ya know its snivilin lowlifes like you that spoil it for others. Why do you have such a sencse of entitlement that you think everyone should be able to do everything.

Less than 1/3 of the kids are going. The rest choose not to go by thier own choice. No one was denied a chance to go. If you think there was, then tell us who it is.

I am tired of reading and hearing about parents not knowing about Parent Group meetings, since school started post cards and letters were sent out to all parents on the school list. Then if an email address was listed an email was sent about three meetings. Thats how I found out about them and got on their distto list. As for the outdoor graduation, it was pretty much settled before that board of education meeting. It will be outside, unless the weather is bad, the board really has nothing to do with it.

Normally I would be happy for the child thats being allowed to go on the trip with help from the school ,its just that in this case if the rumors are true ,it would make me really mad.Its true that the kids have known for years that this trip would be coming and Im sure there are many that have been saving for it ,because their parents have taught them well .Then there are other kids like mine that well I just love them so much that I would personally do what I had to to make sure they were able to join there friends on the trip because their only young once ! THEN you have these brats with parents that are so used to being taken care that they see it as perfectly acceptable for their kids to take a handout like that .Well again I would be happy for the kid ,if I didnt always hear her bragging about the new things shes gotten ,a car ,awesome sneakers ,a trip to a sports camp (that from what I understand she still hasn't paid for ).NO Im not jealous ,just mad that this kid is going on a trip she could have worked and paid for when some deserving kid that would have loved to go wont be able to because this brat has had even more just handed to her !

My child "chose" not to go on the senior trip...but paying for a trip that expensive for my child would have put a huge hurt on my home financial situation. No, I do not smoke, only drink occasionally, and I work a full time job. I am a single parent. I have been to some of the parent meetings and think that every parent should be going if they have something to say. Those that get ticked off saying they want to go got a postcard, that the senior group had to pay for, and then the parents pissing and moaning never showed up! Give me a break! If you are ticked that you want to go, then get a postcard invite that costs our kids's money to send, QUIT COMPLAINING! I truely hope that the kid, or kids, that got their trip paid for, actually worked off the "debt" in some way. the should not get a free ride! I certainly hope graduation is held outside, the first few parent meetings said that graduation was going to be inside, as I said I haven't been to the last few. As far as the price to go to NYC...I believe it is extremely expensive! I can take my two kids and myself on a week vacation for that much money!

Are Gouverneur parents so petty ,hateful and jealous that they would actually question who gets to go on a senior field trip? There are many reasons beside financial that a student could be going at no charge. From all the posts on this site 3/4 of the people in Gouverneur can't afford this trip. As for $800 being too expensive for a trip to NYC, keep in mind dinner and a show costs more than that. If that is to expensive give the seniors a hot weekend in Watertown. They will always remember that

The only thing people should be mad at is that you gave to pay $800 to go to NYC. Why can other schools 1/3 our size can go to tropical islands and cruises for a couple hundred more. They have been going to NYC for years now and many of the students that don't go is because they don't want to waist there parents money on such a boring trip. Ask the students what they want for there trip in 9th grade and then have them work towards it, I bet they won't pick NYC. Gouverneur waists to much money that the kids raise on things the kids don't want. Maybe if someone would Mr.Dickson to stop picking for the kids things might change. I personaly wouldn't want to send my child to NYC with this school. My sister got locked into a building in China town and was told she couldn't leave tell they said she could while on her senior trip to NYC with Gouverneur. Thank god they did let her leave. The school defiantly needs better supervision on there trips.

first of all i feel bad for the child that has u as a parent. your maturity level is way below a first grader. second of all what the hell does it matter your child is going so grow up. just because someone cant afford that much money doesnt mean they drink, smoke, or party.some families have priorities like feeding and clothing and sheltering there childeren.people like u give us all a bad name so u can afford to send your child that makes u better than someone i think not.and there is obviously a reason the school picked these two children maybe they do well in school and other things who r u to judge.and third of all you realy should go to the doctors and have them prescribe u some prozac or something cause this doesnt concern u so relax.

I graduated from GHS and i also agree that the kids should be able to pick where they go, but i also see y they going the same place, Ive been to NYC a couple times and wasnt very blown away with it, but i wish i could have gone on the trip with my friends but sometimes we cant get what we want. but for ppl that cant afford the $800 there are other things that you can do. For instance my brother is graduating this and and wasnt interested in going to NYC so for 1/3 the price him and a few of his friends are going to a 4 day concert out of state.....I guess my point is that there is always something you can do when you cant do what everyone else is doing!!

WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP!!! You better get your facts straight before you start posting about what you do not know. It was specifically ASKED if graduation was going to be held outside, the answer was NO. We stated our case. Told and showed the paper saying the bleachers were safe and then were told if it was what the parents wanted, weather permitting that it would NOW be held outside. So know it all, parent meetings or not you dont know what you're talking about. As for your flyers and postcards, I recieved NONE. I have not moved and provided my email address at the beginning of the year which also hasnt changed and got nothing. I guess I'm just not one of the priveleged few.
As for the kids getting a free ride I am in no way condemning the fact they get to go. I just wish others that were deserving got to go as well. Yes, you do know in 7nth grade they will be going on a senior trip, but let me tell you something, I never in a million years thought I was going to have to come up with 800 dollars for him to go. His father and I did, we scraped and scrimped and saved because he well deserves it but some people just cant do that, and I dont care who you are..... its just not FAIR. As for your smoking, drinking and what not commment, is that the childs fault? No! Should the child be punished by not going no, but will he/she be? Yes. Its sad.
