To start off, I think food stamps are a great benefit for the people that need it. But the people who abuse the system make me sick!!!!
For example....

People that receive food stamps or welfare, that do not have a freakin job!!( I do not mean someone who is laid off, or is disabled) I mean someone who is able to work, and chooses to sit there lazy ass home and live off us working people that pay taxes.

When people on foodstamps fill their cart with candy, soda, energy drinks!!!! Seriously?? Welfare allows people to buy energy drinks? These people need help alright. They cant afford food but they can sure afford 4 dollar drinks.

When people have their cart filled with groceries that even us working people couldn't afford, they pay with foodstamps, then purchase cigarettes or alcohol. That's just ignorant. If you can afford those luxurys, you can afford food.

Anybody who agrees with me, feel free to add to this. I'm sick and tired of working my ass off, and these people reep the benefits.

I agree with you 100% on the abuse of food stamps and how some people take advantage of the help they receive from Social Services. I feel that if someone has lost their job due to unemployment, layoff, illness, etc. then they are entitled to receive help from Social Services. But there are other individuals that take advantage of the help that they receive. I agree about junk food being purchased with food stamps. I feel that the food stamp program needs reform. Take for instance there is a food program called WIC and the individuals are only permitted to purchase designated food products that are deemed healthy foods with their WIC vouchers. I feel the same principal needs to be applied to the food stamp program and that only nutritious foods should be purchased with the stamps. Also it makes me sick when people receiving help from Social Services can afford to go to bingo, bars etc. but depend on Social Services to pay their rent and utilities. Also the ones that receive medicaid and they run to the emergency room every time they get a little scratch or minor illness.

This is a great topic considering I am sick of supporting bums! Many of us are! I work between 40 and 50 hours a week, every week! I get 2 personal and 2 sick days a calendar year. I manage to not go over my limit because if I dont work, I dont get paid! I have been in the grocery store on many times and seen with my own eyes how this program is abused. For example: I was behind a lady @ price chopper her cart was full of 6-pack soda. Okay, nothing unusal it was on sale that week for 5 for 10.00. I knew of this ladies husband, he works constuction so wow, good deal! Please imagine my amazment when she hauled out her benefit card! I could have fallen on the floor!
Something needs to be done, do I have any idea's? No, but I am sick to death of watching some generations live off me and every other hard working person. Get a job like the rest of us.

I sooo agree with ALL of you! What happened to the values of people too? I know that accidents happen but these people today think that there is nothing wrong with getting pregnant without being married. My parents were married before my brother and I were born and that is the values I grew up with. Today these girls think nothing of becoming pregnant with no jobs or income. I was the ripe ole' age of 30 before I became pregnant and I was also married! I made a promise to myself that I wouldn't have children until I got married..and I didn't. Too many people rely on "the system" to pay for their children's upbringing these days. No one is ashamed of getting pregnant when they're not married...they act like its the greatest thing in the world. I also am sick and tired of these people that sit around all day doing nothing while we all have to get up everyday and go to work. I would've loved to raise my children myself instead of having a daycare provider do it..but in this day and age both of us HAVE to work! Nothing is handed to us...we work for everything we have and are damn proud of it! People today have no pride. Sad...but true!!
If no one else acknowledges our dedication and contributions to society..I will! Thank you so much everyone for getting your a$$es out of bed everyday to make this country run!! Kudos to you all!

All of you couldn't be more right!! I have worked my ass off to survive, and these people are living the good life. No need to work, just sit home and live for free. Get your rent, heat, and food paid for you. The other day I was shopping at price chopper and saw a family shopping. A mother, her man (who was sporting a pot leaf hat), a little boy who still had his pajamas on at two in the afternoon, AND was walking around the entire store with socks on. There was also a baby girl a few months old... that poor baby girl had bare feet!!!!!! In 30 degree whether her moron parents didn't feel the need to put at least socks on her??? iNTELLIGENT! Those are the kind of people that are living off welfare right there!!!! Cart was filled to the brim, and they paid 0 dollars for it. If your reading this you smart bunch, put some damn socks on your baby moron! Get your kid dressed before two in the afternoon and wipe his friggen face, as it was caked and covered in dirt and snot. Poor kids. I really.felt for them. If daddy can afford a marijuana hat, he can afford a pair of socks for his baby. I'm not a rude or judgmental person, but seeing that really made me sick.

This is a really good topic. In fact it is one that I have been thinking alot about lately. It is my understanding that the welfare system was originally created to help people who were down on their luck. Whether it job loss due to lay off or illness. Maybe it was that mom who suddenly became a widow and had alot of mouths to feed. It was even intended to help working families who just couldn't quite make ends meet. The original system sounds like it was great. Unfortunately, today's system rewards laziness. If you want to lay around and pop out one child after another and sleep til noon, not work then the welfare system is for you. However, if you lose your job, have an illness or are a working member of society who just needs a little help making ends meet, forget about it. The welfare system will not help you because you are a tax payer and you are not willing to lay around all day and do nothing while the rest of the world supports you. I understand full welfare for someone who is disabled, I also understand it in a situation where there is a catastrophe leaving a parent to raise children on their own with insufficient income. However this thing of generation after generation living off welfare is ridiculous.

There is another way to look at this too..it's not just welfare..its the disability part of it too. There is a certain family that I know of that the father is on disability and so are his 3 sons! It infuriates me in the summer when I go home from work for my lunch break and the 4 of them are sitting under a nice shade tree drinking beers! I would love nothing more than to be able to raise my own daughter instead of sending her to a babysitter everyday. What happened to people having morals and taking pride in their lives?! Our country has gone to sh!t and its not gonna get any better until we go back to the days when we respected our elders and worked hard from day light to dark for what we have. We are a country that is spinning out of conrol...what are we going to do?

I agree with you on the disability issue too. There are a large number of people who are milking the whole disability thing. They can't work but they can go walking through the woods hunting for 8 or 10 hours at a time. They can go out drinking and dancing and partying, they can ride snowmobiles and 4 wheelers, but they are just to disabled to get a job. Meanwhile, there are those who truly do have a disability who can't get any help or benefits.

What about the losers who have children on SSI, marry losers on disability, have a job and don't usually go to it! that drives me insane! I still have not quite figured out how to convince a doctor to put me out of work week after week! Holy crap...maybe if they don't work...take everything away...makes sense to me! I saw a young woman trying to use her WIC in price chopper and threw the biggest fit I have ever seen over some stupid oranges. She was the rudder woman I think I have ever seen. Kudos to the older woman who was chair...I do hope her evening was better! To her parents...hope you are proud of her actions. I hear of a big scramble to use extra HEAP funding available this week too! Why ? Ever heard of overtime, saving a little something, and hello...live within your means!

I think as taxpayers we are sick of being treated like we are the dog crap on the bottom of society's work boots! Will the middle class ever be able to get ahead? Doesn't seem so! They can't seem to take enough out of our pockets. I think we should toss every politician out and the only ones that can run are the people that get their butts out of bed everyday and ontribute to society..in a good way! I bet if politicians had alot more to lose they wouldn't be so unconcerned with the working man. I know I wouldn't be if I had a fat bank account...How about taking that money that we are sending to other countries and taking care of our own? This is America...no one should be homeless or starving and they are!! I'm so disappointed in this country I can't even stand it! Is it that hard to understand what need to happen here..it's common sense!!!!!

My fiance and I both work and have 2 children. I work two jobs on top of taking care of my kids. We were getting foodstamps and medicaid but not HEAP or any type of cash assistance. Now since I got a raise at work we are no longer qualified for foodstamps. Money is tight, I am enrolled in college and on top of my books and tuition I have to pay gas which is an outrageous 3.99/gallon in order to get back and forth to school in Watertown. Then I see other people out there who not only live off of welfare and have their whole life even though they are completely capable of working just to lazy to go get a job and THEN Mommy and Daddy still hand everything to them! Makes me want to puke!

I would love to see people on welfare be drug tested but the sad fact is, its never going to happen. Theres to many loopholes. What if the entire family is on welfare has like 4 kids, and only the father tests positive for drugs? The wife isnt going to kick him out and its not the kids fault their dads a drug addict. Then you get into what if you test positive and admit to a drug problem when you have a family? Say prescrition drugs from an accident you were in? Again, the family shouldnt be punished and you admit you need help. They arent going to just pull your welfare out for your entire family, then they'll spend thousands of dollars paying welfare for the entire family and on top of it the user gets a free ride to rehab where he may or may not kick the habit. So in the end you wont be saving nothing, it may end up even costing more.
Again, I'm all for it. Its just never going to happen.

Never thought of it like that...you're absolutely right! The goverment are the ones that let this get so out of hand..they should be the ones to fix it..but I bet you'll never see it happen..like you said ..they're not gonna just let tose kids get fed because Daddy and Mommy smoke pot or whatever. Thanks...

I wish they could find a way to better the entire system. That would mean actually having jobs to give these people and a productive way to solve the problems that are already there. Its sad. People work so very hard to support themselves and barely get by, then we have to support the ones that dont want to because the government cant figure out how to fix the broken system we have. :(

I agree with most of what you say, but I would like to defend one thing you said. I have worked since I was 16, part time in high school and then full time after college. I got pregnant and had a baby at 21. I was not married. Not all single parents rely on the welfare system to support them. I worked, as a single parent, and supported my child. I had a second child 3 years later, still not married, and still not on welfare. My kids have the same father, but we just were not married. Some people use the arguement that they are single to support their decison to use the system. I have gotten HEAP in the past, and have also been denied HEAP, while working, I got Food Stamps for a very short period of time between working 2 jobs and not making ends meet, I was also denied them when I made more than allowed. People who use the system, not abuse the system, should not be held in the same category. I didn't buy soda, steak, and luxuries, I bought ground beef and made several meals out of what I had. Please don't bunch everyone into the same category when talking about using the system to survive or their family situation. Thank you.
