It works for them - maybe it could work for us. Cameras in high crime areas and camera equipped police car for surveillance in the same areas. Not more police, more cameras.
MASSENA, N.Y.-- It may seem like science fiction, but the Massena Police Department is working to put an un-manned car into service as part of an ongoing surveillance initiative. The new car may not drive itself, but it will send live 360-degree video back to the station.
"We're creating a surveillance vehicle, and we're going to install cameras in this vehicle. It's going to allow us to put this vehicle in high crime areas," said Timmy Currier, Chief of the Massena Police Department.
The car is made possible in part, by a grant. Senator Joe Griffo was in Massena on Wednesday to announce he had secured $5,000, which will help pay for the project.
"It really allows him some latitude in order to do what he feels needs to be done here in the department," said State Senator Joseph Griffo.
Chief Currier says the surveillance initiative has already been helpful, much the cameras they placed on Main Street and Andrews Street.
"In fact, we used them on Saturday. There was an accident where both drivers indicated they had the green light and our sergeant was able to draw back and say 'you didn't have the green light'," said Currier.
These cameras and the new surveillance car will help fill the gaps of officers Currier said he might not have.
"We don't have enough eyes and ears, or boots on the ground. This is going to enhance that significantly for us," said Currier."
Mayor Hidy said that this will help answer the demands of some village residents who have requested more policing.
"They were adamant that there were certain sections within the village that need to be more monitored," said James Hidy, mayor of Massena.
Chief Currier would not go into details on what the car would look like. He would only say it will be unmarked.

What Gouverneur needs is not Cameras, it needs more things for people young and old to do. The Chamber Of Commerce and the Village Board needs to bring in other businesses. If these "Local Family Owned" places that are affraid of "BIG BUSINESSES" to come in and take away there money, maybe they should shut down. Think about it,.. These little stores and food places have a small amount of employment, i am sorry but if they can't sustain the amount of people in this town for work, than changes need to be made. It's time to contract "BIG CORPORATIONS". I know this sounds like i am aside from the topic, but i am not. Why do people commit most crimes?(1)Being board, young people become destructive and find ways to keep themselves busy.(2) People have no money and no means of making any, they break into places and steal. Solve the problem! don't avoid it! Bringing cameras in will only result in people getting caught, which will result in fine and filling up our already FULL jail. Which will come back down to money! Which there is none to make! Like i said solve the problem!!.. Start buy STOP arresting people for STUPID CRAP! The amount of gas that is used and the money it cost to Transport to and from Gouverneur to Canton is to much.. The county is in ruins already.. Here these are the chain of events... Broke person needs money, he/she steals. Then they get arrested, transported to jail. Then the county pays for a Public Attorney which (THE COUNTY AND STATE ARE BROKE) then the persons has to be brought back in front of the court where the crime was committed.(MORE GAS) in the end there are fines.. Thanks to the "WELL NEEDED CAMERAS" right?.. Fix the problems at hand, try doing your jobs, and help pitch in on saving money.(You can't get blood from a stone)

Couldn't agree more.

Do you have any facts Randall that back up your response?
Do you have any ideas on what can be done besides the ideas on the table?
Do you have any statistics?
Can you offer any knowledge besides an simple "Couldn't agree more?"
Your answer lacks depth of knowledge, care, concern and overall it doesn't follow your normal long and filled up answers.

I need facts to prove whether or not I agree with something?
Yes, but this is a thread about police surveillance cameras. I don't really want to derail this thread, so that's not really appropriate for me to post here.
...what do statistics have to do with this?
I don't really see why I should need to. I'm confused, are you disagreeing with me?

I think it's a great idea. It certainly couldn't hurt any.

That is what you do to everyone else...thats all. Do you agree and why? Do you have any facts on why it wouldn't work? What are your thoughts on Massena's solution versus Gouverneur? What do you think about adding more police and raising taxes? Come on...saying you agree doesn't cut it.
If they parked a police car in the municipal parking lot...do you think teens would gather at sandbox park, smoke dope and cause trouble - nope. Do you think if they parked a car near Nina's that people would fight outside or smoke dope...nope? Do you think if they parked a car on main street that people would pass it at a high rate of speed, blow their cheap mufflers, cut people off and not stop for a pedestrian...nope. Do you think if they added a camera car near any crime ridden area that it would remain a crime ridden area...nope. You cannot deny the logic. I can deny the cost of more cops riding around and treating the public like we owe them a chicken dinner.
It was all for discussion. No it doesn't involve the Koran, Romney or Obama...but it is a local issue.
Any comments? Randall?
