The N.C. Highway Patrol has charged Elizabeth Ekberg, 22, of Bahama, in connection with a fatal accident that killed a 30-year-old pedestrian along Guess Road on Aug. 5. Brian Gene Long of Genesee Road in Durham was walking along Guess Road with Kristen McLaughlin of Durham when he was struck from behind.

I don't understand how someone could hit and kill one person, and hit the second person walking along the side of the road on a straight road at noon and be only charged with a misdemeanor. She had obviously been distracted in some way. Brian's friends and family have to live without him now. Kristen has to live with this as the last memory of him and the future that didn't happen.
