I happened to be at 8 yr old baseball all star tournament in Harrison Tn. A mom from The Goodlettsville team lost control and shouted every curse word known to man, grabbed a lady, and confronted a 14 year old boy with cerebal palsy then lied thru her teeth to the police and said she did not curse...Dont care if the had the best or worst umpire in the world, if they got cheated......do the good people of goodlettsville think it is ok to rage across a parking lot screaming mother fer and GD with little children all around.

I am from Goodlettsville and my children have played baseball with the rec league. The organization has been extremely successful in their showings against other teams in TN and beyond. After years of watching in season games at Moss Wright and post season All Star games, I would like to weigh in on my thoughts and experience regarding baseball in Goodlettsville.
The first observation is, if you have a son who has made the All Star team without the benefit of having a Dad as a coach, then understand you have scored a major accomplishment. It is unspoken, but understood that come selection time of the All Star team, the coaches/fathers follow the idiom of "you scratch my back, I'll scratch your's." I am not minimizing the talent of their child, most coaches/father's boys are great players, but there are some All Stars who make it over more talented players because of their connections. Not fair, but it is the way the world operates and instilling the proper perspective in the kids who deserve to make it, but don't, gives them an advantage. They are learning a hard lesson now and will hopefully understand and be able to adjust, and adapt to some of the inequities in their future. Some of these All Kids have huge egos perpetuated by parents who emphasize their child's greatness and downplay or not acknowledge values such as humility
My second observation has to do with behavior. Due to the fact that Goodlettsville produces great talent and results, it does breed some unhealthy behaviors and attitudes that the commission addresses before the Spring season begins. Unfortunately there are those who disregard the gentle warnings of poor sportsmanship and keeping their opinions to themselves. They believe they've produced the next Derek Jeter and can do and say what they please. People who scream and curse usually are not the most sophisticated or self-restrained individuals. When I use the word sophistication it has to do with good manners and it is something that anyone from any walk of life should and can exercise. It amazes me to watch a parent go beserk on umpires or make their child feel horrible about striking out.
My last observation also has to do with parent behavior. It concerns some of the "people in the know." While they are more sophisticated than the screamers and cursers, they are most odious. If you have a child who plays well, you might be worthy of their presence. If not, you will not enjoy the honor of being a part of their inner circle. It is quite interesting and eye opening to be approached by someone who wouldn't give you the time of day, to do an about face when your child has done something quite spectacular on the field. I find it quite amusing these people care this much and would treat people this way. I am not trying to be inflammatory with this statement, but these are self-described Christians who must have been asleep during the sermons at their place of worship. They have forgotten, it is about our boys, coaches and the parents working as a team, learning the fundamentals and having fun while achieving the goal, which to me is winning or losing with grace and good sportsmanship.
Earl, I am glad you posted your experience about the game in Harrison. I know these attitudes exist on some level in all leagues. Please know for the most part, these attitudes and behaviors are exhibited in a minority of the Goodlettsville population. Those who let a little power get to their heads and those who live vicariously through their child's performance, do so in my opinion, to maintain a level of self-importance. To the "All Star Mom," in Hendersonville, I hope your post was a joke. There is no reason to be blaming a women's poor behavior on PMS. I can see why you are friends.

Carrie....this is the most insightful comment I have read in a long time. Kudos for understanding the reality of organized youth sports AND being able to describe it so eloquently. Thank you.
