He doesn't freak me out one bit! What freaks me out is the lack of control and discipline that lead to the situation at hand.

While I don't know the school or the child, I have seen it happen in our school. A child is bullied. The bully aligns the other children against the victim knowing full well he will not be punished, but merely talked to if anything happens at all.

To take it a step further the bully probably is well liked by the adults in his/her environment. Outgoing, possibly athletic, definitely refined in childlike social graces when adults are around...a real "Eddie Haskell" for anyone who can use it as a reference point.

The victim becomes the bad one because the bully is such a delightful child. The peers don't want to be the next victim or get there jollies in that it is not them who is being tormented.

Enter the bully box or the peace table or some other form of nonsense that will never work as well as expulsion or a paddle to the rear. Once the adults that the child relies on prove useless--well, what is the end result? I think we see it here!

We need to end the mumbo jumbo and the counseling and the chat with the principal and take a realistic view of the situation. Maybe shorten the school day and releive ourselves as educators of the social responsiblility and put that back in the home...a whole nother topic--the home.

It is my hope that every child involved in the bullying here is punished even more severly and swiftly than the child with the knife. Also, any adult who had awareness and failed this child should find him/herself releived of his duties.

The steadier you are now, the better: this is not the time to throw caution to the wind and be exceptionally attentive to details. If anything, labour the point and you'll find in a few days' time that you are really glad you did. Friends will be able to give your morale a big boost at the moment, if you're in need of support. Team relationships and efforts work tremendously well at the moment. Why fly solo if you don't need to?
