Mine is not so much a comment as it is a question. My husband and I always used Grand Isle as our get away from it all kind of place. Is Elmer's Island still there? Can you still put up a tent and camp out? Do they still have the cozy little motels along the highway? It is a far drive for us to look and I really hope my haven in Louisiana is all right.

The state is planning to do something with Elmer's Island, as matter of fact there are big plans for the area. The question is when will those plans come to pass?

I recently read a post on the internet regarding the opening of a new campground on Elmer's Island that also offered sea kayak rentals. I don't remember which site I saw this on, but it was probably rodnreel.com or louisianasportsman.com , in early June 2007. When I mentioned this to some friends who have a 5th wheel trailer they were very excited and want to plan a trip there NOW.....great, except I can no longer find the link-does any one here know anything about this new campground? thanx for any help

You can no longer enter Elmer's Island from the highway, but if you drive from Bridgeside Marina around to the Gulf side of the island, you can fish along its' shore. Hurricane Katrina washed a large cut from the Gulf along the left side of Elmer's road.
Grand Isle has made a remarkable comeback with a brand new Bridgeside Marina, debris has largely been cleared, and cleanup continues. Town Hall has just reported that FEMA has cut off their funds for removing debris and now the property owners must fend for themselves.

You can not camp on Elmer's Island, but you can at the Grand Isle State Park.

Can anyone tell me if the old bridge is still there after Katrina. If it is has the state done any repairs and is it open to fish from? Can you still drop lanters from it at night to catch specs? Thanks

Last thing I read, and it was some time ago, was that the STATE OF LOUISIANA was going to buy the Elmer's Island property from the current owners. Then possibly it was going to be designated as a state wildlife refuge.

In regards to the fishing bridge...yes it is still there but no repairs have been made. It is NOT open to fish from. The lastest report on that is there are plans to begin building a new bridge within a year or so, and the present bridge will become the fishing bridge. The new bridge will be built right along side the present bridge. The old fishing bridge will remain due to the fact that it was declared a historical landmark. That being the case they should just repair it in my opinion, but as far as I know that's the story. Hope that was of help to you.

I am know someone that is related to Elmer family and this is what she told me today as of 8/10/2007 about Elmer and his island. She said "He died in his car. went into one of the cannels buy his house. My family and I think he was killed but we dont really know. He was really drunk. And his ass hole brother didnt want to keep the island open and took all his money. So we could keep it up. So right now its still in court and the state closed it untill everything is settled. But who knows how long that is going to be. I miss him and miss going down there. I cant wait till they get it all fixed so I can raise my son where I spent every weekend of my life in the summer."

Thats what I was told fellas. Bridgeside Marina has a great pier to fish from. Only thing is that it says PRIVATE PIER. Went out there and asked the people out there fishing if they were staying at the camp, and not a one was. So me and my brother stayed and caught over 100 white & specs that night. This was first week of June.

I live on Grand Isle just a couple blocks from Elmer's Island. It isn't open. Regarding the old bridge, a local paper stated that they were going to restore the old bridge using the existing pilings and hope to have it finished by the time the Black Drum come in. The hotels are open and many of the people that have camps are now renting them by the day and week. Two are on my street. There's several real estate companies that offer the rentals.A couple owns a small RV Park across the street from Elmer's Island and rents kayak. Grand Isle is back and in better shape.

Daily Horoscope for November 23

Libra

Today can be one of the most romantic this month, as the nurturing Moon lights up your fifth house. Express your love and affection and find it returned to you several times over; you can multiply your joy today by spreading it around. Watch out for too much of a good thing, however. There are bound to be killjoys who will resent your blithe spirit; don't waste your happiness on those who are enjoying a foul mood.
