I would love to visit the site soon. Were there ever any Pisa Bird attacks around the Alton area as well. I saw a show on the discovery channel that showed an attack around 1970 in IL.Last but not least are there truely huanted houses in Alton. I heard that Alton was one of the most haunted towns in the US. Thanks

The old war prison is located near the bottom of Piasa St. and Broadway Ave. As far as the tales of the Piasa Bird going out of alton down the old river road from alton towards grafton there is a large metal piasa bird and a rest stop along with a plaque that describes the history. The Hayner Public Library on Broadway should have a lot more detailed information. The Piasa Bird has been moved too many times to mention in history. There is a lot of great American Indian history in Alton. I recommend visiting Pierre Marquette State Park to see a lot of the interesting history in the area.

I believe the original site was else where, that even though the few remaining stones of the prison are housed on the corner lot of Piasa St. and Broadway Ave, the actual prison was not located there. I believe it set much closer to the river, and I as well would like to know where the original location was?? If I am wrong about this then I am sorry, but I believe I have read, as well have been told by many reliable resources that Piasa St. and Broadway Ave is not the origanal location of the old cicil war prison....

There are many haunted places in Alton, as well as haunted tours. Go to Haunted Alton.com for more info. The Piasa Bird site was originally where the little park is by Norman's landing on the River road. Norman's wanted their land back so the Piasa Bird moved to another location on the River Road. As for bird attacks, there were some really big birds reported attacking people in the 70s but I don't think they were Piasa Birds. The Civil War prison wall is on the same lot it originally was on but was moved. It used to be in the far left corner of that same lot, towards the river. Alot of this information is at the Alton Visitor's Center and also at the bookstore on 3rd st. owned by Troy Taylor, a paranormal investigator in the area.

Born and raised in Alton, moved away in 1982. The prison was located at, or very close to, where the piece of wall is located today.

When they widened the river road way back when I was a kid (maybe 1965-68) they blasted the bluffs to allow 4 lanes where there were just 2 before. The Piasa Bird painting was on that section of bluff (near the water plant)and they repainted it at a new location farther up river. They later added the metal one.

I read in an earlier post that the prison was at Piasa and Broadway. That's not where the wall is unless they moved it since i was there visiting my mom a couple years ago. It was near William and 4th, north of the Peevy mill (or whatever it is called today). Dad use to have an office in the Pride Inc building just around the corner and I would play near the wall when I waited for him.

Is it not still there today?

I use to work at the Seafood escape, which is not there anymore; the building is owned by the same person that owns Fast Eddies. Seafood Escape was on State St., just off River Rd. It is close to that factory, which is a flour factory, that there use to be these yellow colored 'thing' on my car when I got off work. The Old prison wall was right in that parking lot behind those buildings. The Firehouse bar, the Haunted Alton Tour place are both there in those same buildings. Where those buildings are, to my understanding, is where the old civil war prison use to set. Hope that helps.

If I remember right, those buildings there were built around some political contraversy. The prison housed Confederate soldiers, then was taken over to house Federalists. When Gen. Lee was defeated, the prison was returned to the federalist and tore down to build a hotel. I'm 100% those structures were originally built as a hotel and Lincoln stayed there when he was running against Douglas.

I grew up there, moved away in, oh, about 1968. St Paul's Episcopal Church (10 E 3rd St, as memory serves me) is VERY active as a spiritually fantastic place. 1966 I had a truly strange experience there. Check out the town's history. It was DEEPLY divided during the Civil War.

I am founder of Unseen Paranormal Research And Investigations and went to Alton over the summer. I noticed a lot of old empty building right at the river front. One being a old movie theater. Why do they still stand? What are the plans for them? I'd like to bring my group into investigate them but don't know who to contact or even if the building are in use. I did notice one thing.. Everyone drives way to fast. Please contact me with any information regarding places we can investigate. We specialize in spirit photography and we don't charge anything. Thanks.
