Father releases video of 14-year-olds' fight

Kris Maples, coach of the Wichita Showtime basketball team, agrees it was an unfortunate incident.

I think that criminal charges should be filed against this kid. I understand rough play but intentionally getting on top of an unconscious person and pummeling them is inexcusable.

I hope the DA does the right thing in order to teach other kids a lesson concerning sportsmanlike and humanlike conduct.

I believe the kid who threw the punches should be counseled by a psychologist or psychiatrist, and possibly prosecuted in a court of law. I understand how athletes can get agressive during a contest, but the unbridled ferocity of this attack tells me that the attacker has some very serious self control problems. If he acts like this in a supervised contest, how will he act when the public is not watching? Or worse yet, how will he control his rage if he should happen to gain access to guns or other weapons?

It does appear that the kid in the white uniform did push the kid wearing the dark uniform first. BUT the savage attack that ensued is inexcusable. AND what is even more inexcusable is the fact that the authorities in Newton have apparently done nothing about it.

From what was released, it barley shows the white uniformed player hitting the dark uniformed..and then you see DAMN MORE of the black uniformed hitting the white uniformed. THANK GOD FOR DVR. I rewind the news footage and you can CLEARLY see the white uniformed throwing the first blows. Basically, it was just a fight and the black uniformed got the best of the white uniformed. I think it's a damn shame how this is being blown up. But the white uniformed shouldn't have taken the first blows. The dark uniformed was just protecting himself. Get the hell over it. It was just a fight between two boys...let's see how far this drags on..

Sir, you had to be at the game when it started...from the tip off to the incident. it was clearly SELF DEFENSE.... not a "SAVAGE ATTACK"..the child from the jayhawk team just (unfortunately) got the bad end of it. The so called victim.....had been throwing elbows from the START of the game....the player didn't realize the child was unconsious, He had just "had enough" of the abuse he was getting from the elbow throwing which the referee was CLEARLY not calling...

Before you judge this child or any other....get a copy of the tape from tip off to the incident...he didn't know the child was unconscious.....what is inexcusable is the parent of this child is wanting monetary damage out of this when he himself admitted that he has taught his child to more or less "Throw Elbows" in a game...what i hope is that the DA looks at the tape the entire 5-7 minutes the game was played before the incident occured

My sons play in this MAYB (so-called) League and the cheating that goes on is atrocious to say the least. Apparently this is a perfect example of getting what you ask for!. The white boy had been elbowing and taunting the black boy during the entire game and the referee let it go on. The referees and coaches are to blame. So DAD, you know what your son was doing wrong -- SUCK IT UP!! Play the entire game for everyone to see.

Are you INSANE? What part of this video do you see as "just a fight between two kids"? There is no part of this that is OK. Pushing and shoving is just part of basketball, but this is anger of another sort. This young black kid has serious anger issues. He needs to be dealt with before he ends up in a gang, or worse..

What no one seems to be mentioning or noticing is that the black uniformed player hits the white uniformed player when they are running down the court. This is probably the only reason the jayhawk player gave him a shove. Isn't it funny how we only see the second half retaliation of everything that really goes on in any game.

I watched this video and what I saw is a criminal offence. An attack like this is not a selfdefence issue or a simple fight. If the player on the Wichita felt he was being fouled he needed to go to the coach. At no time do you the right to attack someone in this manner. This was not a fight, this was a sucker punch that could not be defended against. The person on the ground was unable to defende himself which adds to more criminal offences. The players from both teams were pushing each other. From the tape you could not see the player from Lawrence punching the Wichita player, they were pushing. And for all of you calling this "Self Defence"; read the law. Self Defence is when there is a clear and resonable suspicion of sever bodily harm or death that you need to defend against. When was the player from Wichita in this situtation.

It's obvious where the player learned his attitude from...the coach. Maples should be held liable for the incident also. An apology? He should publicly give one to the injured boy and his family. What a jerk.

This should have been taken care of LONG ago. No one should be hit like that. This was a game, not a fight. I am thankful the dad did not let this pass by, with out something being done.
