I am on Glenwood PD and I can say this much. We are deeply saddened that the Village has chosen to proceed with layoffs when they have not examined other options for budget cuts. We have offered concessions but were told they were not enough. We were literally notified less than one month ago of the budget crisis and layoffs. We have heard Village officials blame the prior administration (of which 4 trustees and the mayor were part of), They have blamed the Chief, whom they appointed. They have blamed each other. Every day we come to work we are told a different dollar amount we need to cut our budget. Not one of them has any clue how much money the Village is short, how much of that money ought to come from the police depatment budget or exactly how many officers might loose their jobs. When asked why they voted to eliminate positions at the last board meeting, two trustees blamed the Chief. The Mayor stated, in front of half of the police department, "don't arrest anyone." When further asked to clarify his statement he was asked if an officer actually observes an armed robbery occur and the offende is still there, should the officer NOT arrest the offender. He replied, "yea. Don't arrest him.". Those of you who live here need to understand that this Village has NO plan to address the problems that will arise when they lay us off. They have given no consideration to the impact this will have on your quality of life. You will be left with a skeleton of a police department that will be entirely reactive. We simply will not have the man power to provide preventative patrols. We will be burned out, working mandatory overtime just to provide minimum manpower coverage. There will be one investigator who will only be able to work on the most serious offenses. Is this what you want? If you object to any if this, please come out and protest with us tomorrow at 5 pm. We took an oath to serve and protect you and we intend to keep our end of that promise to the best of our ability. We need manpower and equipment to do this efficiently. Your elected officials do not want to provide us, and therefore you, with that. Are they upholding the promises they made at election time?
thanks police

It seems the chief can not budget a department in my opinion.

Whether or not the Chief can budget the Department, the officer answering your calls for assistance are about to loose their jobs. The Village Officials selected the Chief. The sad part of this is no matter who gets blamed for the budget problems, the cops and the citizens will pay the price. It's time to stop blaming Magio, Falica, or anyone else. The elected officials are steering the ship. 5 of the 7 sitting before you tonight have been on the board for several years. They screwed this up. They hired ANOTHER Village Administrator and are paying him over $100,000 a year. They wasted your money on attorneys to illegally give themselves all the power. Yet they are not the ones that will have to figure out how they will feed their families, make their mortgage payments or buy their kids Christmas presents this year because they lost their jobs. They are putting your property and safety in danger. My safety is now in danger as well. They have been mismanaging money within the police department for too long. Two years ago, they had us driving unsafe vehicles, there were only two functional squad cars requiring 2 or 3 officers to pile into one car. We have already been short 2 officers for over 3 years. The equipment we need to protect ourselves and the citizens has been faulty or simply non-existent for years. How far is this going to go? The Village's next threat is eliminate your Police Department and pay Cook County Sheriff's Police to provide you police service. Please come out and support us and yourselves tonight.
