Because one inmate used a cell phone to coordinate robberies on the outside, this makes the case as to why they are dangerous and should not be allowed? It's the same argument that is used when a shooting happens and gun banning is called for. Guns don't shoot themselves and cell phones don't commit robberies by themselves. People do these things and those who wish to do these kind of things will find a way one way or another.
Banning guns only leaves guns in the hands of the criminals with no way to protect yourself. Banning cell phones in prison only punishes the many who use them for legitimate purposes, to stay in touch with friends and family, at a much cheaper rate than charged by the prison phone companies.
Lots and lots of things in our society CAN be used for illegal or immoral purposes. We do not ban them, we prosecute those who use them in that manner.
