A 33-year-old Van Nuys man was arrested Thursday after his DNA was allegedly linked to the 2002 rape of an unconscious 16-year-girl in a South Glendale motel, police said.
The Tri-Cities Fugitive Apprehension task force arrested ARMEN SHAKHBAZYAN about 5 p.m. Thursday after tracking him to an auto body shop in Van Nuys, Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz said.
He faces two felony counts of rape of an unconscious victim and willful harm or injury to a child likely to produce great bodily harm, according to Los Angeles County Superior Court records.
Police released few details about the incident, which they said is still under investigation.
Still, Lorenz said the then-16-year-old girl reported she was raped in May 2002 by a man at the El Rio Motel on the 1500 block of East Colorado Street.
The girl’s recollection of the rape was vague because she was unconscious during the attack, he said.
The rape became a cold case because police were unable to track down her attacker, but in May 2010, Glendale police detectives were notified that Shakhbazyan’s DNA was a match with samples collected in the rape, Lorenz said.
He is being held without bail and scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in the Los Angeles County Superior Court in Glendale.

2 local Armenian students among Glendale Scholarship Endowment recipients
PanARnet - Six local students are heading to college this fall with a few extra dollars in their pockets after being named Glendale Scholarship Endowment recipients.
They include 2011 Crescenta Valley High School graduates Camille Johnson, Andrea Kizyma, Justin Trejo, Katrina Yentch and Adena Zadourian, and 2011 Hoover High School graduate Artin Mirzakhanyan. The scholarships ranged from $500 to $1,000 of a total $5,000 that was awarded, Glendale News-Press reported.
Chuck Sambar, a former Glendale Unified teacher, administrator and school board member, founded the Glendale Scholarship Endowment in 2001. He immigrated to Southern California from Lebanon as a young child, and was looking to pay forward the American dream to young people pursuing their education in the face of extraordinary challenges. To apply, students must be a senior at a Glendale Unified high school and have plans to enroll in a two- or four-year college or university after graduation. They are required to submit an essay describing how they overcame obstacles in their life, as well as demonstrate that the scholarship will make a difference in their ability to earn a college degree.
The Glendale Scholarship Endowment was once among the most successful of several community scholarships managed by the Community Foundation of the Verdugos. It attracted hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants and private donations, and at its peak in 2009 gave out $320,000 to college-bound students.
But the scholarship fund was hit hard by the recession - the grants disappeared and Sambar and his co-collaborators were hesitant to solicit friends and neighbors for donations.
But the endowment’s $100,000 principal remains intact, and Sambar announced earlier this year a fundraising campaign to double it. He has also personally pledged to match any contribution up to $5,000.
“There is a need out there and I know that our friends and our community want to help,” Sambar said.

I thought that they always told us that only White Americans rape children.

Armenians DO rape. From Glendale News Press 1/29/2015.
A former UCLA water polo player from Glendale who was accused of rape last year pleaded no contest on Thursday to one count each of assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury and criminal threats.
Hakop Kaplanyan, 20, was sentenced to 180 days in jail, five years of probation and 60 days of community labor.
The remaining charges — which included two counts each of sexual penetration by a foreign object and assault with intent to commit a felony, and one count each of forcible rape, sexual battery, false imprisonment and possession of matter depicting a minor engaging in sexual conduct — were dismissed as part of a plea deal.
Additionally, Kaplanyan was ordered to receive a year of sexual-offender counseling, but does not have to register as a sex offender, according to Ricardo Santiago, spokesman for the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
The case involved three alleged victims of sexual assault who reported that the incidents occurred between Oct. 1, 2012, and April 2, 2013.
Kaplanyan was ordered to surrender in March.
According to Kaplanyan’s attorney George Mgdesyan, the jail time, which he said was not originally included in the prosecution’s offer, came as a “shock to the family.”
Kaplanyan, who is now a student at Los Angeles Valley College where he plays water polo, is doing well academically, Mgdesyan said.
“This man’s lost a lot,” Mgdesyan said.“This is a kid who went to college, it’s a dream to go to UCLA, be a water polo player and before you know it, his dreams are quashed and he’s kicked out of school and can’t play water polo” because of allegations which Mgdesyan called “not true” and “suspect, at best.”
He added that Kaplanyan has maintained his innocence and that the prosecution’s case had holes in it.
For example, during one of the alleged assaults, there was another person in the room, but “nobody heard anything,” Mgdesyan said.“There’s no forensic evidence of any struggle or any fight or anything like that.”
Kaplanyan attended Clark Magnet High in La Crescenta, but played four years of varsity water polo for Hoover High and was one of the most decorated water polo players in area history.
