Why do employers ask for your SSN on job apps?

Doesn't it bother you how much information companies ask for on job applications?

Personally, it worries me giving out my Social Security Number up front.

it is so they can do a background check to make sure you are not a criminal or an illegal immigrant, and it's necessary.
