I went to Glen Mills from 96-98. I believe Glen Mills had a great impact on my life. If it wasn't for the school discilpine system(our ass whoopins that wasn't that bad) I don't believe I would be the man I am today. I am a successful business owner, married with 3 kids, and a beautiful home. They motivated us to do a lot of things that we thought could never be accomplished. I was really heavy in the streets and the street wouldn't of taught me the things that I needed to know to succeed in life. The streets taught me about the struggles but I believe if I didn't go to Glen Mills I would of ended up dead.

After reading this blog, I think its wonderful that you were/are able to change your life around and make a family and living for yourself. I guess GM's can help those who figure out that they too have to change their thinking. I guess some fell it's easier to just stay with the street as long as they in the end dont end up dead or in an out of jail the rest of their lives. Kudos to you.

My son, possibly may have to go to Glenn Mills. Upon hearing the news, I went online to see what information I could bring up on this school. I do not know much about Glenn Mills and seem to have a mixed perception. I was wondering if there are any parents out there who could give me some advise or insight as to what I or my son may experience. I do feel my son needs some guidance and will not take any from me. Hopefully someone out there can give me some solance.

My son is currently in Glen Mills, and it is a nightmare!!These stories that you are reading are true!! I have let the staff know that I am aware of the beatings and the school is currently under investigation. If you have an alternative placement check that out. It is hard to stay in contact once your child is in that facility..they allow you limited access to your child so you dont have a clue whats going on.

He will not get the proper guidance at Glen Mills..My son is worse off mentally now since he went to Glen Mills. That place is not designed to help.

i was a "student" at G.M.S and there are deffinatly many inhumane things that go down in that place and are covered up all the time. some units are better than others and there are good staff and bad staff and students can get discharged with some positive things as well. overall i do feel that G.M.S.is all about the money in the end and everthing else they "show off" or boast about is all sugar coating. it is deffinatly a very violent atmosphere and punishment is often taken way to far and gone unpunished. i was sent there for a violent crime and was surrounded by far more violent acts than what iwas commited for everyday.

in response to this i was also recently in Monroe and i do agree that there are many benificial things to the program but there is allot that needs to change. getting your lips ripped apart or getting choked till blood vessles in your eyes burst is not teaching juvenile offenders an appropriate way to act in society. there is a line that is crossed far to often at GMS. personally i am not sorry i was sent there and feel fortunate for what for me was an opportunity but GMS has ALLOT that should be changed.

alot of people hear that the kids at glen mills got it good... i heard that shit when i was down at the CCJDC in cleveland i had a choice between 10 months in Mawmee, Oh which is full lock down facility or 6-9 in Glen Mills... so i choose Glen Mills since i heard they had it good and it was a lesser sentence.. little did i know i would be choked and tourtured by grown men for 18 months... since Glen mills everyone stays there for at least a year unless your from philly they get shorter sentencing with more home visits.. when i was there there was a asian student from cali that was there for 2 years+ then finally got discharged only went home once.. So fuck what ya heard because thats not the case in glen mills... what goes on in glen mills stays in glen mills thats that

some glen mills students do have it good but there is a hierarchy in the student structure in glen mills and if you dont have status with your peers or in the system and you fuck up in the slightest was you deffinatly dont have it easy. the was the place is set up makes it very difficult for kids to bounce back off an issue and many kids opt for a more traditional lock up rather than to stay in a place like glen mills. to say that poeple should stop crying about the inhumane shit that goes down is outragous. Glen mills can be extreamly easy if the sytem works for you but if it doesnt there is nothing easy about it. your "mad as hell" about something your totally ignorant of. former students who share their experiences and their opion are trying to do something about what they feel is important so if you feel that your experience at what ever juvy placment you were at was so terrible maybe you should think about what you could say or do to improve the situations for other kids who are getting sent to juvenile placements.

Yea I was there back in 92 that asian kid was probably me. 2years there was not a good place for kids. I was sent from different unit. first van buren then filmore then taylor hall. I didnt like the fact that philly kids were treated better than the kids from the different region of the USA and the staffs I think were prejudice to asians

Jerome some of the things that DAn is talking about is true. I remember when we go to the student union we do coverage which means we check for graffiti broken chairs etc. student union hall is where you can make phone calls from home. play pool watch tv eat etc. I agree glen mills is a place for a second chance instead of prison. I was beatin when i went to use the bathroom I was blamed that I wrote a grafitti mark on the wall. Which I never did. and I was put in concern and beaten. by staff by the name of john ford God Bless him until this day Its been 16 years I still remember it. It angers me but I just pray that all the kids in that school would be ok. If its still happening we need to put a stop to it.

Most of your stories maybe true... Not saying they not but as we all know if you go into GMS wanting to better yourself and following the norms you wont have a problem.. Most of us were they because our parents discipline wasnt working and we needed tough love... A kid has never been killed there.. Just getting the ass whoopings are people should have giving us.. Me I got touch twice... MA'd once and got PR'd once... I learned my lesson.. The school taught me how to speak properly and say yes no and excuse me, taught me responsiblity, it got me education cause at home i wasnt going to school... After the Mills I went to college and got an AAS degree.. Yall bulls on here bitchin was the bulls that cant stop lying cant stop getting over and want to fight and talk back to staff n shit.. All you had to do was go there and stop runnin ya fuckin mouth and follow the rules.. I thought it was sweet at first and i got put in my place after that i was good... the place is corupt but what workplace is not... Isnt it dirty cops? isnt it dirty CO's in jail? ANd kid this and kid that.. I was 18 when i left we had almost 20 people in my unit that was 18 and had one 19 year old... Had three staff get hit by students while i was there and i say a staff member get hit in the head with a hot sauce bottle in the cafe... The way you do get dealt with at the Mills is you do it too yourself...

I do believe that what these ex-students are saying is quite true. Yes, troubled youth need to learn discipline and respect. Why don't they also receive physcologial counseling? They're troubled for a reason. Beating the crap out of kids is not the way you teach respect and discipline. Students have to be seen at hospitals for broken noses, ribs, etc. due to staff beatings...for simple acts such as shaking their head or making a funny face in response to a question. How can staff get away with this type of physical abuse and not be put in jail themselves for abuse? What can be done about this? Who is supposed to be investigating this place, or are they too, also corrupt. Parents think TWICE about allowing your son to go there!! Beatings don't change anyone for the positive.
