Public offers input on Estes transit facility
#1 Sep 6, 2013
Is anybody as naïve to think that Franky and his boys will listen to public input? They're going to build it as big as laws will allow. Oh, wait a minute. They will grant variances so size won't matter, just like The Performing Arts. The town doesn't give a rats ass as to what we want and they never will.

I would be enthused by the new parking facility if I actually thought it would increase the number of people choosing to walk rather than drive downtown. In addition, I have never found the existing facility to being even close to inadequate. The pattern is that people try to park downtown first and if there is nothing available, then they drive back to the Visitor's center, thus increasing pollution, congestion, air pollution, and carbon emissions.
It would be good if there was some automated way to warn people to not bother going downtown to park. This kind of technology is available for parking garages so maybe it could somehow be expanded to the existing parking lots.
Another issue is that while shuttles are available from the visitor's center to downtown and RMNP, there is little incentive to take them since they have to put up with the same congestion as the cars. In order for shuttles to be truly successful and to have a real impact, they must provide convenience and speed not available to the automobile.
Another factor is that the town will be the FLAP program which is intended to speed the auto through downtown on the way to the park. This will be make it less likely that people will want to park at the Visitor's center.
