Does anyone know for sure what is going on with Unimin? Is it really for sale? Has K-T bought it? Is it going to close it's doors? Unimin Clay company has done so much for the Gleason area. Just a few weeks ago they bought an A.E.D. for the School. What will happen to the employees?? Will they loose their jobs?

I hope no one loses their jobs, they are hard to come by around here. It sure would affect a lot of our local families. Good luck!

I am pretty sure that Unimin is going to buy K.T. and Spinks, they already own Old Hickory and have for years. The Old Hickory deal is just a secret! The rumors of Unimin selling out to Emerys (KT) was that! A RUMOR. UNIMIN is so big they will buy up all the other clay companies.

Old Hickory deal a secret huh? I work at Old Hickory and we do some business with Unimin but we surely are not owned by them. K.T is looking to buy Unimin. The only problem with K.T buying Unimin is that Unimin is union and K.T shut the doors on their Mayfield plant to get the union out so i wouldn't figure that K.T would let the union stay. The paperwork has been done but not finalized at this time as far as i know.

Unimin better hope KT dosnt buy them out! Emerys was the company that came in and demanded they fire all the stripping crews and others. Then shut Mayfield down! A very short time for folks to be forgetting!

Unimin will not be bought out and even if they were the employees would keep their jobs because they are protected by the Teamster Union... As for "Letting the Union Stay "if bought out they have no say over that.. Once a union is voted in the company has to allow it.. The union was the best thing that ever happened to Unimin.. Their jobs are protected. To bad the other clay companies didn't get a union...

Are you talking about KT clay? I work for KT Feldspar. They are both owned by Imerys but are different buisness groups. One of the local Unimin plants here in Spruce Pine burned to the ground in November 08. That plant produced feldspar and quartz. At our plant we produce feldspar and are beginning to produce quartz. Unimin tried to buy one of our plants last March, but Imerys keep uping the ante for Unimin to buy plant. Just wondering, does anyone think Unimin and Imerys could swap clay plant for feldspar plant?

Just wondering what everybody was thinking about the newest news of Old Hickory buying out Uniman? Old hickory is a family owned co. And has been for almost 100 years. From my understanding they have plants in Gleason, mayfield, and Georgia and now buying uniman?
