I am the founder and parent volunteer of the statewide group, Save Kentucky
Before addressing Pam's points, I'd like to draw attention to the over the top comments about Dr. Lessenberry. I know Dr, Lessenberry, Dr. Lessenberry is a friend of mine, and I can tell you, you don't know Dr. Lessenberry. He works 18 hour days, and I don't know of a time he has taken a full week off for a vacation, and certainly not out of the country. He has a wife, 4 kids, and a cat, and has every right, as does anyone else, to express his opinion on the subject. The only "power" he has, is that to give his opinion. Saying all those nasty things about his motives, and character without knowing him, says more about you, than him.

Here's some education points for you.

There is no academic reason to start school in early-August and every financial reason not to. We are paying higher costs for electricity because the August heat puts more demand on our systems. Our teachers are still buying classroom supplies with their own money, and programs, and teacher positions are being slashed.

August is one of the two hottest months of the year -- yet instead of swimming at the pool and enjoying the last month of summer, like those in most of the country, our children are forced to sit in classrooms and try to focus on the material at hand. Not only is this cruel to do to our kids, but is very difficult on the poor teachers trying their best to keep children focused and enthused when they can't go outside for recess, and dread the hot bus ride home.

A survey conducted by Survey USA, a nationally respected group showed 88 percent of Kentucky residents surveyed want the school year to begin August 15 or later, with 67 percent wanting the school year to begin after the last week in August or later. Of those surveyed, sixty-one percent wanted a uniform school-start date for public school children. Only 11 percent of parents surveyed said they had ever been asked for their input on school calendars.

I don't know what Internet and dual credit classes have to do with the argument, but the teachers of the on-line classes are from Universities that follow a traditional calendar. The students enrolled in these classes sit and twiddle their thumbs for 3 weeks till those classes begin. Their time could have been better spent working summer jobs earning money for their college tuition.

Along with our group of several thousand parents, teachers, business men, and bus drivers, in
Ky., there are other groups active in the remaining states that have tried this. Of the few states that initially started the concept of starting early, most have already bailed out, and only four other states Alabama, Mississippi, Indiana, and Ohio remain. They each have similar grassroots movements underway to stop it, and because it is the vast majority of parents wish, I predict it will eventually succeed.
As to the mild summers, how is it the since 1995, 23 high school football players have died of heat stroke.
I’d recommend that more time be spent on why, than who.

Pam Waters:
I also disagree with the WAY that Dr. Lessenberry has set out to change the school I am personally opposed to "big" government and think that any city or county school matters ought to be settled just the cities and counties in which the proposed calendar changes might take place...
HOWEVER, Monica was right. You couldn't possibly know Dr. Lessenberry if this is the man that you have "judged" him to be. And as you have found it necessary to take the time to attack a man you do not know, I find it necessary to take the time to defend the character of the friend that I DO know.
What he is doing is exercising his divine right to express his opinion. You do not have to listen. As a matter of fact, you could take the same steps he has taken and start a movement opposing him. Doubtful you posess the initiative to embark on such an endeavor.
But INITIATIVE is one thing that Barret does possess...he had the initiative to raise money for the YMCA. He had the INITIATIVE to put in the hard work to go to med school and the INITIATIVE to work very long hours to make the money you seem to resent him for. And if past is any indicator of future results, he WILL be a key factor in eventually changing this school calendar...cause he works hard for things that are important to him......rather than mindlessly mocking the efforts of someone he does not know.
We have disagreed on this matter several times, and he has never once turned the discussion into a personal attack, or made me feel as though I was "wrong" for disagreeing with him. As a matter of fact, he just always says, "those are some good points you brought up"....unlike yourself, Barret is always open and willing to listen to all sides of an arguement.
I am glad you brought this up, actually. It is a rare opportunity that one gets to stand up for a friend in such an open venue. I am glad to do it...he would do it for me. For just as he surpasses me in many walks of life, he oft surpasses me in the ways of friendship.
I'm sure you probably consider yourself to be a "christian" woman...I happen to know what church you attend...
People like you are why I am an atheist...
"The single most cause of Atheism in the world today are christians, who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, and walk out the door and deny him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world finds truly unbelievable."
He would NEVER judge a complete stranger the way you have judged him...

People like Pam Waters is what gives Glasgow and the surrounding areas such a bad reputation...look out how most of the posts are filled with gossip. Do any of you READ? Have interests other than what other people are doing? Get a LIFE! or at least don't begrudge those who have one!

All you LOSERS who are talking about Dr. Lessenberry...think about this: do you see HIM posting about your white trash lives? No, he is busy working, or playing with his children, or playing tennis, or raising money for the YMCA, or working hard toward a cause he believes in...

Glasgow SUCKS. Nothing to do, no culture, nobody gives a damn about anything but what other people are doing.

But next week there will be someone else to talk about....hope it's not your MOM!
