I opted for a midwife. In my opinion they are a little better than a dr. I had no family physician when I got pregnant with my daughter he had quit practicing 2 years prior to my pregnancy. Nellie Bell was great with me. And one of my friends recommended her. I seen Nellie Bell with both of my pregnancies. She took time to get to know me and spend time with me, which meant alot I was 17 when I got pregnant with my daughter 18 when I had her. Nellie Bell seemed to be there for me more than the dr that I was seeing before her. She's why I chose to go with a midwife. I liked her, BUT not everyone's the same not everyone likes the same people. People just need to figure it out for themselves.

Yes - you "opted" for a midwife and that is great for you. But what about those who want to opt for family physician to deliver their baby? Well, thanks to Craddock and Dirig (who Nellie Bell works for) and their smear campaign and TJ Samson / Bill Kindred violating the hospital's own bylaws, that CHOICE has been taken away.

But if you have a complication, an OBGYN needs to come in and do a c section. Same as if a family practice doctor were doing the delivery. But Craddock and Dirig have no problem doing c sections for Nellie Bell, a midwife, who is their employee - but not for two professional, licensed and board certified family physicians? Think it has anything to do with Craddock and Dirig getting money from Nellie Bell's patients? Cause it sure can't be about competency, as they state.

I THINK EVERYONE HERE THAT HAS DEFENDED NELLIE CAN AGREE THAT YES YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT THE TECHNICAL TERMS BUT ALSO THAT NELLIE HAS BEEN A BETTER MIDWIFE THAN THE DOCTORS HAVE BEEN DOCTORS. THIS IS THE POINT WE ARE TRYING TO MAKE NOW AS FAR AS THE "DOCTORS" GO I THINK DR. CRADDOCK WOULD BE GREAT AS FAR AS UNDERSTANDING AND TRYING TO MAKE YOU AS COMFORTABLE AS POSSIBLE DURING PREGNANCY AND LABOR FROM WHAT I'VE HEARD......

Gail, I wish you would explain something to me and I am not trying to be a smart aleck. Why do you refer to her as Dr Nellie Bell if you know she is not a Dr? Other people on topix have referred to her as a Dr also and I am just trying to understand. Do you call physical therapists or respiratory therapists a Dr? Or a nutritionist a Dr? Or a lab tech a Dr?

<quoted text> According to the website of the Ky Board of Medical Licensure, there is no one named Nellie Bell who is a licensed physician (Doctor) in the state of Ky. I also checked TJ Samson's website and there is no Dr by the name of Nellie Bell. Previous posters have referred to her as a midwife. A midwife is not a Doctor. I am sure she is very competent at what she does and I am not reflecting anything negative against her at all. But PLEASE, when we are talking about professionals in the medical field, let's use the word DOCTOR to refer to actual licensed physicians. Midwives, physician assistants, nurse practitioners ARE NOT Doctors.
ok. i agree with the proper use of terminology. point taken. now if i may make one. it has been my experience that many "licensed physicians" tend to be professionals with a degree on the wall proclaming their years of education in medicine, while many more of these midwives, physician assistants, nurse practitioners have MORE EXPERIENCE in the medical field. These people take care of the sick and injured. Doctors write prescriptions. now, before anyone jumps the defensive i'll say that i've encountered many good doctors as well. your former comments regarding ms. bell seem snarky at best, and i find it ridiculous that this whole dramatic scene over the proper use of a word was spun from a woman's sincere inquiry of opinion for a medical matter...if you'll excuse me, i'm gonna go be disgusted now

No she does not do ultrasounds herself, an ultrasound tech does and another doctor reads those results. Dr. Dirig looked over my results. She does do cervical/vaginal checks.
