Yes, it may be pointless what she writes, but if you knew why you may not feel so good about making fun of it.

if you don't want to read it- then just don't. Some of us really enjoy hearing about Bertha. I buy the Progress every week- just to find out what Bertha is up to.

It is the laughing stock of this county, my nephew tells me that kids take it to Barren County Middle School and read about it and laugh for hours....
So that's how BCMS students spend their time learning by spending time reading and laugh for hours....HOW SAD!!!

BERTHA IS A WONDERFUL LADY.
SHE IS ALWAYS HELPING SOMEONE WITH SOMETHING AND NEVER ASK FOR ANYTHING IN RETURN, OTHERS SHOULD TRY THAT, IF WOULD MAKE YOU A BETTER PERSON
WE LOVE YA BERTHA

Well honestly if you are going to put your name in print in a paper, you have to be willing to take the criticism with the compliments.

However, I do find mocking a tiny, old woman for what her mind finds entertaining or interesting, to be rather shallow.

She enjoys her column and it is G-rated (even if she said she took a bath - OMG someone in Kentcuky BATHES!!!), so who really cares?

I agree that Bertha is a wonderful lady. Some terrible things have been said about her by SOME PEOPLE on this thread, but do you know what she would say if she read this? She would say... "Well, I'm glad I could bring some laughter into the lives of those young people." Then, she would just laugh about it herself. She is truly a very giving woman, who expects no praise whatsoever; and as someone already said, she expects nothing at all in return for her good deeds. She just loves helping people. There are many individuals who love and respect Bertha for all the good things she does for people. I am one of those people.

One more thing: I do hope the person who sent her remarks to Jay Leno enjoyed it, because Bertha would laugh right along beside you. Not me, though, because I thought that was a spiteful deed on your part.

This is just my opinion.

I've met Bertha. She's the sweetest lady I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. Some may not like her articles or stories, but there are people from out of state that subscribe to the Progress just to read what she has to say each time. Instead of bashing her (for no good reason), why not look at it as, "WOW! I SURE WISH I HAD HER SPUNK AND ENTHUSIASM WHEN I'M HER AGE." She's a delight to all that know her. I don't know her very well at all, but the day I was introduced, I couldn't take my eyes off her. She's a darling.

this is my mother you are talking about
she is a wonderful lady
she volenteers everyday and lives to follow christ she is 85 years old thats right 85 and still works today probally harder than most young people so you would like to say something bad about her you should at least one day follow her around and try try to keep up with her then talk about it but until that day you should try to be more like her and not talk about her

My suggestion to you, Lisa, would be to contact Mr. Jobe and express your concerns and not put it on a topix "gossip line." Don't take that in a disrespectful way, because I don't mean it that way. Just my suggestion...

Again, I have a great respect for Bertha. To my knowledge, she does not write the column, but she does contribute to it. Most of the people I know do not do that. I'm sure the author of the column would invite Cave City news from anyone who wants to contribute.

As for the Park City news, again, just contact Mr. Jobe if you are that worried about it.

Just my opinion...

i know Bertha as well. She is a very good person. You better watch how you all talk about her, you might need her help someday and she will not be there to help you. She is very good hearted and we all love her.

p.s. You that are talking bad about her better hope that her nieces and other family members do not fund out. You would probably have a war on your hands..........

This article is kinda pointless, there's is nothing wrong with the contents, but this space could be used for more relevant subject matter.
It is typical of a newspaper to have a features section. The Features Section has a main purpose of ENTERTAINMENT. That is the same reason a lot of papers have Dr. Gott or Billy Graham or Dead Ann Landers...

Through the history of papers features could be anything from a gossip corner, to poetry to actual books. Did you know Vanity Fair was printed in a newspaper in sections?! I bet someone complained then that a story about a silly ambitious girl was hardly RELEVANT to more serious pressing needs. Even though it is now considered a poignant remark on social class and wealth of the time.

If you feel the space would be better served with something else (even though the Barren Co. Progress already has a prolific amount of local news, classifieds, sports, school, etc...) then you should write a letter to the editor requesting such a thing.

And by all means please include a suggestion for what you would like to see and would consider "relevant" to a LOCAL paper.

BTW I do not mean disrespect...I just feel, after working at the paper, many people have an idea of what a paper should be but don't care to understand how a paper works.

The Progress CLEARLY has more than enough room for this article since an editor will typically edit information down to make room for more important things (like actual news stories). The Progress clearly has room for this article judging by it's continued length time after time.

A paper would also be interested in any suggestions its readers have because they WANT to entertain their readers and make them happy.

I have known Miss Bertha for many many years. I just have one comment for all of you bashing her for her very entertaining exerpts of small town life She is personally an inspirtion and a mentor to many! She is a christian, smart, compassionate, generous, supportive of all that is good, interested in the progress of Cave City, an ambassador of good will (if you will) and can work circles around any of you and leave you panting for breath. LONG LIVE BERTHA!!!!

And to those of you defending this fine lady.......GOD BLESS YOU!

People are never happy when someone else's life seems to run so much smoother than their own. Be happy for her and everyone else and there is a place at the end of the Cave City Personals telling who you can send your information too so if you don't like it always being about her send some information about your ownself! But I don't think you will because you come off as one of those people that always have to find something wrong with something. So get a life and get over it!

Bertha is great. We travel to the Cave City/Park City area 3-4 times per year, and one of the first things that I do is to buy a newspaper to see what is new with Bertha. It's great to read a newspaper that does not have the usual garbage in it.
P.S. Sorry to see that Wayne Stinson passed away in September.
