yup what we have to look forward to:

Speed cameras are causing increasing frustration and anger for motorists. They are more and more seen as a revenue-raising measure and not a legitimate tool for cutting speeding.

A militant group, Motorists Against Detection (MAD), led by the legendary Captain Gatso, have taken it upon themselves to vandalise speed cameras, rendering them useless.

Says one website:

Motorists Against Detection (MAD) in the UK have claimed responsibility for taking out about 600 roadside speed cameras (known as Gatsos) across the country, according to spokesman Captain Gatso. The group only targets cameras on main highways, saying that they actually support their usage in built-up areas.
Disabling methods apparently include spray paint, angle-grinders and even plastic explosives!

Cheekily, they add:

CMG does not condone the disablement of Speed Cameras, especially with a spray can, say black, held about 5 inches away form the lens and applied for about 10 seconds.
One of the biggest safeguards against tyranny is that when laws get too unpopular, people will just refuse to obey them, or will actively sabotage them. That's why the increased ability the authorities have to spy on people via CCTV, read their email correspondance, and track their telephone conversations, brings risks as well as benefits. Sometime I think the worst sort of society would be where the government could make a law and guarantee it would never be disobeyed, even if it was a totally democratic society, and never passed laws that the majority didn't want.

Vandalising public property and obstructing the law are not good things in themselves, but they can be useful safety values.

GIRARD LETS START ARE OWN MAD CHAPTER!!!!

For a whambulance call whine-one-one. For destroying the cameras, yea it sux to get an "unexpected" bill in the mail, but you could just obey the law, no? I am not for a police state, nor am i for the statistics which display the rate of speeding going down. In the case of the "gatsos", all i know is as long as the law exists, they will pump more tax dollars into restoration, making YOU pay the bill. I do not approve vandalism as a tool to wage war on our government, more subtlety needs to be exercised in reconstruction and self-preservation.

I hate the "just obey the law" argument. Would that it were only that simple. Do you never speed to get around an obstructing truck on an interstate? Have you never misjudged a yellow light? At an intersection, would you rather be watching the speedometer or the street? Guess wrong, let your attention to the law (as opposed to your attention to the road) wander and you get the bill, even if you were on the road entirely by yourself. These devices are another form of "sin" tax, meant to raise money and make a profit for their installers, and only incidentally to improve safety. Let your state legislator know you want his support for the bill requiring cities to post police officers with every functioning traffic trap.
