Forty years ago, Richard M. Nixon looked around and did not like what he saw and decided it was up to him to change it. He decided that he was the only person who had the answers to the problems the country faced. He decided that only he could save the nation.
From there, it was one minute step to deciding that anyone who was not with him must be against him; anyone who did not actively support his programs or, worse yet, who opposed them, must be an enemy of the state and therefore his enemy. Messiahs normally do not see the possibility that they just might be occasionally wrong.
That self-assurance and arrogance of purpose finally led to Nixon’s downfall by his own hands. A nation breathed a sigh of relief that we had dodged despotism and the first steps toward tyranny.
But it seems that the Republican Party, in its desire to embrace what it sees as “traditional values” has revived the Nixon Legacy and is heading down the exact same course.
Since January, the GOP has taken very public and very aggressive moves to pursue and threaten their opponents. Just like Nixon – whether it is actually written, as his was, or whether it exists only in thought, the Republicans have an enemies hit list and they are going to go after anyone who has dared side against them; even those who have simply failed to support them in their righteous cause.
The list has few surprises since most of the names on it have long been a target of the GOP – Public Broadcasting, Labor Unions, and Civil Rights activist groups. One surprise is the AARP, the latest enemy to be identified and singled out for retribution – and make no mistake about it, that is exactly what all this is about.
The Republican dominated House Ways and Means Committee is seeking to strip AARP of its non-profit status. They openly admit – in a change from their other hit list campaigns – that this is specifically because the organization supported the Republican-hated Obamacare. In other words, they want to eliminate the organization, as they seek to do with unions and the independent voice of public broadcasting, simply because they dared to oppose the Righteous Right.
No longer are they hiding behind budget balancing or security reasons; now they are coming straight out and saying they want to cripple these targets merely because they are opponents. Now it’s simply a matter of,“If you don’t fall in line and get in step, we are going to come after you with whatever weapon we can pick up.”
And that is called political terrorism. Not to mention a full frontal assault on Freedom.
There are no other words for it. They are now openly pursing a course of single party rule; any opposition must be completely and totally crushed so that nothing stands in their way. It explains completely why they have refused to compromise, to debate and why they have refused to even acknowledge the need for meeting in the middle to serve as many people as possible. Their purpose is no longer to serve the interests of the people, but to serve the interests of the party.
Or perhaps that should be “The Party.”
We as a nation can sneer, wave dismissively, deny that it could happen here (forgetting conveniently that it nearly did during the McCarthy years) and ignore the fact that this nation is currently being shoved down the path to Soviet-style single party rule; yes, we can continue doing that right up till the time we look around and see that everything that we have worked for and stood for as a people and a nation is gone. No one wants to believe that a place like America could ever be so vulnerable, so susceptible to the failures of other nations.

Bush lowered taxes for most all working Americans--many which enjoy those tax breaks today. He also introduced privatization of some of your Social Security contributions. Democrats didn't like that too much.
So Bush lied to Congress about our Holy War? He must have started pretty darn early, because here is what Democrats had to say before Bush even stepped foot in the White House:

That fact that you are not sure that Bush lied to Congress about Iraq having WMDs speaks volumes about your reality. Now did the Dems say go after SD before or after the photo of Rummy smiling and shaking hands with him? Thanks though for the link to another sour grapes loser like yourself.

It's you who insinuated that Bush lied. Yet years earlier, we have Democrats talking about the same thing: weapons of mass destruction.

So the question I pose is if Bush lied, then Democrats must have lied too--particularly Bill Clinton.

Thanks for playing.

I have said this B4 & I'll say it again... We KNOW that Saddam had WMD's! Even organizations like the U.N. & Amnesty International & another organization that prefers to stay impartial; Doctors Without Borders Knew that WMD's were used against Iran & the Kurds so why is this still an argument? That baffles me. He certainly didn't drop them down an empty oil well!
We & the world should be more concerned about where they went. Did some go to Syria, buried in secret bunkers, just buried somewhere or a combination thereof?? He wouldn't let inspectors in for the longest time. We should remember that when the '100 hr' land war ran him out of Kuwait, many of his jets were sent to his former enemy, Iran & he had his troops ignite oil wells as they withdrew. And he was firing Scuds at Israel which was a non-combatant. He used human shields which included children. He was ruthless & somewhat unpredictable but always power hungry & narcissistic.

Much of Bush's information came from other countries. Tony Blair stood behind his findings until his last day in power. We had Iranian scientists telling our agents of Saddam's plan for nuclear capabilities and the fact that his WMD's were designed to be portable.

The UN sent a dozen or so people to inspect Iran. Iran is about the size of Texas. There is no way for them to cover every inch. Even the UN admitted that Saddam's record of destroying his WMD's were as phony as a three dollar bill.

Bill Clinton removed UN security forces so he could send bombs to Iran. This was his response to Saddam refusing to let inspectors into certain locations.

Point of all this is that Democrats made politics out of this even though they were actually on the same side of this issue as Bush before he took leadership. Our involvement there had nothing to do with 911, but to prevent another possible 911 from happening.

Yah, that's what history says...Oh that's right. GW is historically considered one of the worst presidents ever. How about Clinton? In fact, the Tea Party was born out of ignorant religious folks who were too ashamed to admit that they voted for GW twice that they changed their name from Conservative Christian Republicans to the Tea Party to cover their tracks. Too bad nobody...and I mean nobody bought it.

I suggest you look up how the TP got started. Secondly, where do you get your information that Bush is considered one of the worst Presidents ever? History is not written yet, and with the moron in the White House we have today. he makes Bush look like the greatest President we ever had.

I suggest you go figure out why every Tea Party member is directly paid by oil billionaires. I suggest you figure out why every white church going Republican was making bold statements about global weather trends a decade before Gore mentioned it. Thanks though for fighting tooth and nail to hand our country over to corporations. How'd that work out? Ask Mitt. Really, look at the lengths you guys went to just because you couldn't admit you didn't like black people. You guys don't fool anybody. Ask Colin.

Every TP member is getting paid by oil billionaires? I suppose you have evidence of this. And while you're getting evidence together, why don't you post evidence to the other ridiculous claim that religions somehow got together and discredited global warming. You see I asked my sister about that a few months ago, and she's never heard anything like that. She and many members of my family are very religious and attend church quite regularly.
